JHECONYERS V» EEKLY,
A MYSTERIOUS WOMAN
Atlanta Constitution] ■
A mysterious woman with an un
history, died iu At.auta jnst one ago
yesterday, and the circumstances at¬
tending iter death render that event
ot more than pissing interest to the
public. On the 17th of last Aprils
woman,apparently about thrity years
of age, of prepossessing appearance
although dusty from travel, apjeired
at the home of Miss Josie Greenwood,
on the Boulevard, and applied for
board, which was given her. She
waB of fair complexion, with blue eyes
and light brown hair, and was ot me¬
dium height. She had with her a
large Saratoga trunk across the end
< t which was printed with a stenci
simple “Mms L. Moore.” She stated
thaf, she was from Milledgeville, but
it .s not now believed that she was
from ihut pise*. She \?a» refined in
all her mowin' rtf* and gave every
indianion that she hsd been reared in
a good home and had hsd the advan¬
tages of the best classes ot society
Oi her past history she had nothing
whatever to say, and fer list matter
seldom spoke except when addressed.
Her companion, however, was ot s
different disposition, and wm inclined
to take life less pensively. At length
it happened that Josie Greenwood
changed the place of her abode and
two months ago moved to a bouse on
McAfee street a little north of Mills
Her mysterious lodger again engaged
hoard with her and the two took up
their lodging together. The good
people of the locality in which they
lived did not like the new comers and
were inclined to regard them with an
eye of suspicion. It is said that
some ot them went so far as to remon¬
strate that the two women shonld not
come into the locality. Parties who
became interested in the subsequent
developments in the cai-e. Matters
rocked along quietly, however, until
lust weak, when it became evident
that Miss Moore was in a delicate
condition and a physician was sent
tor. Dr. Hodgson was called in, but
as it tvs so complicated case, he called
in Dr. McFaul for consultation. The
woman was delivered of n girl baby
bat it boon became apparent that she
was iu a dangerous condition liom a
complication of troubles that followed.
Later it was found that she could
not live and she was notified that
she would die. Even on her death
bed she was the same mysterious
woman and it is, not known that she
ever revealed her identity. It seems
that she must have told her physicians
something of her history however as
they offered to telegraph her parents
concerning her condition. She beg¬
ged them not to do so and stated that
they must have moved away from the
place at which they were living
when she had last heard from them.
Sho beuged to bo allowed to die
unknown and to be buried and her
secret buried with her. Dr. Hud
gsou kept an accurate diary of the
progress of the case and all the inci¬
dents as they occurred. Whether
or not he had real name is not known
As to what the woman told him he
is as silent and immovable as a rook.
Last Tuesday the woman died, but
the little child lived on. And uow
comes more mystery. When the
woman died a gentleman went to the
undertaking establishment of Mr>
Swift and stated that he wanted him
to attend to toe matters of the burial.
Tue gentleman stated that he wm
acting for a friend, and that it would
be csifh transaction A coffin was
sent out and into it the remains were
put" During the day the hearse and
nvo carriages eppeaved at the door.
It was the dying request of the wo*
man that no notice ot her dying be
given and that not even a minister
be called in to perform any sort of
ceremouy. She desired to go quietly
to her grave. When the procession
started to the grave Josie
«ood intto,™, CMTirg. «lo U .
and in the uext was the undertaker.
Wbeu the processiou passed
drug store of Searpe Bros, on Mar*
street, it was was stopped and Dr.
Hodgson, whe has au office there, en
teri d the carriage with the under¬
taker aud thus the carrag# with the
undertaker, and thus the procession
moved on to the cemetery. All the
wishes of the dead woman were cars
r;«d out to the letter and so lor as it
now known her identity is shrouded
iu f«4js< } auU »iio h,s gfi e to
the grave as quietly as is possible in
thi9 country. It it not known what
she told her physicians- They were
called to see her in a tru st sacred
cepaoity, and it is probable that she
ha* revealed to them something of
her past history and something of
Iter old home. It is certain that
they ware acquainted with some facts,
or they would not have been so par*
tiorlar as to note every incident and
to keep a) ecord of every transaction.
While impartiug to them the inform*
ation, she made plain her wishes that
her death .or any reference to it
should not goto her family. The in*
formation that thus came to the know¬
ledge of he plrysiciaiis has been care¬
fully guardeded by them, and yester¬
day Dr. Hoesou stated to a Coxstis
TOTiesrman that he would not reveal
anything ahat the woman told him
unless he was calledinlo the courtsto
testify in reference to the matter He
said that such information as he had
was tor the court unless it was shown
that it was right and proper for him
to reveal to too other purties. He
said that she was an unfortunate giri
and that lie saw no necesiiy in not
complying with her request to keep
her death as quiet as p"8.*ib e H-
stated to the reporter most postively
that no man in Atlanta was aiiy a
way concern in the payment of the
funeral.
