highly re pectable widow, liven some

ho sooner had lie left the h use than she
ran to a neighbor’s house and gave tin;
alarm. She toid her friends it was a ne
gro. she did not know his name but it
was the one who lived on Mr. Moon's
place and had been to her house a few
days before to sell her some wheat, that
she knew him—the moon was shining,
and she could sea his size an't color and
could readily reeogmze his voice. Fifty
or sixty men were soon on his track.
One negro living on Mr. Moon 8 place
was arrested and carried before her. ‘He
is not the one ’ she said, and lie was at
once released. Another one°\vas then ar¬
rested living on the same place. When
brought within 50 yards of her she ree
ognizad him, and said most positively
that he was the right one. This ne^ro
had been to her house t wice before, and
had made impudent and improper re“
marks to her. She had told her friends
about it and was afraid of him. He was
laken to the place where the man had
run from her house, and the tracks were
fogud to be identically the same. There
could no longer be any doubt of hi guilt,
and it required the hardest kind of per¬
suasion to keep the eiowd from hanging
him to a limb. He was carried to Mon
roe under a strong guard.
The grand jury found a true bill against
him Saturday morning and before the
ink was hardly dry he was put on rrial.
Messrs. Florence, Rogers and Felker
were appoint d by the court to defend
him. The negro had no witnesses and by
4 o’clock the jury was locked up in their
room trying to marke a verdict. The
courtroom was packed during the entire
trial, and tha crowd anxiously watched

As soon as the jury went to their room
they stood ia for conviction bat two or
three of them wauted to recommend him
to mercy. At 12 o’clock tSaturday nigu;
Judge Hutchins went to the court room
and told thejuiy to close their delibe a

At sunrise Monday morning the jury
sent for the Judge and rendered th ir
verdict of guilty. At 9 o’.dock the room
was crowded to hear the sentence. The
Judge asked the prisoner if he had any
thing t® say why the se itt nee of deatli
should not be passed on him. For the
first time the prisoner denied his guilt
