Hog Chuck, a Chinaman, who died in the Almshouse on Wednesday last, was buried to-day with intere.-ting ceremo¬ nies. The body was incased in a hand¬ some walnut casket, with a plate on the li 1 bearing the date of the birth and death of the dead Celestial. The bottom of the casket was tilled with Chinese coins, and the body was covered with a peculiar Chinese prforated paper with lettering on it. At the grave Rev. Mr. Lyle rejieated the Lord’s Praver in Chi¬ nese and English, after which a hnfaber of ribbons which were hound about the body were removed and thrown upon the coffin. The casket was then low-, ered, and sidle the gravel was being showered upon it the Celestials cas< meats, rice, tea, baked dough, roast chicken and a clack bottle among the dirt. On the way to the grave China¬ men, seated beside tbe drivers, threw rice and paper along the ground <ra versed. Ten thousand people witnessed the ceremonies at the grave. It was in¬ tended to have had some service in the Episcopal Church, but the crowd was so grent that it was impossible to get into the church. Mrfyor King refused to al¬ low 8 New York Chinese band to go in the procession, and the police stopped the tiro ceremonies in front of (lie house from which the deceased was taken to 1 is grave. Nearly all of Ike Chinese in the city attend* <1 the funeral.—[Fidla delphis Dispatch. A DUEL AltOUT MHS. FRANK LESLIE. On Tuesday morning the Marquis «le Leuvilie, whose name I had occasion to mention last week, fought a duel on the Belgian frontier with a nobleman who pas supposed to be Lord Anglesy. The Marquis de Leuville’s real adversary was CWiht Alfnensegg, well kflowfi in Paris and the German baths, where high play prevails in piivafe, if not in public. Whatever may be stated to the contrary, the quarrel that led to an encounter was not a political one, though both parties would wish it to appear so. Tt arose from the name of a fair American being taken in vain by Count Almensegg. The combatants met near the Belgian town < f Fumes, The Marquis’ seconds were MM. Rodocanachi and Vavassour; the Count’s were two Englishmen, Messrs. Howard and Vaughan, After some splendid fencing on both sides, M. de Leuvilie wounded in opponent in tbe arm. The latter was conveyed <o Fumes to an inn that bears an unmistakable English sign of ‘ Ye Red Rose,” and shows still traces of the architecture that obtained ih the days of Y'ork and Tai caster wnr». The former proceeded to Boulogne, w henc • he crossed over to England. The Marquis de Leuvilie is an Anolo Frenchman, and one of the best known shots all over the world, Pc was to have married Mrs. Frank Leslie. The dutch haa been broken off solely on the score of religious difference. M de Leu* ville secedes to the Roman (’afhoiie Church, while Mrs. Leslie remains a Presbyterian. ‘ t'CCESS OF THE KEELY MOTOR A B|>ecial to tbe Now York Herald from rhiladelphia savr: At the monthly meeting of the directors of the Keely Motor Company to-night, the welcome announcement was made that the nton ster engine which has been so many months building was completed, and that it would be run for the edification of all stockholders on or before the mid¬ dle of October. President Bnndi.ll and Trustee Baldwin, Smith and Greene ex¬ pressed thetnselves as highly satisfied. The treasurer's report showed that the finances of the corporation were in ex¬ cellent condition, but the amount of stock still in the treasury could not be learned. The secretary stated that, w hereas there were only 900 names on the books as stockholders in December last, there were now’ over 1 , 400 . Appli¬ cations for passage on the first train to New York were received from all parts of the country, but none have yet. been entertained. A final inspection of the machine will he made by the trustees at the inventors shop. PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FIRES. An article which we publish in another column bom the New York Review is Lately. For some years past the ffre in¬ surance business has been unprofitable, and the best- companies have found their ospettses exceeding their income. It is not, tbe Review declares, from any lack of business, lor business is better than it has ever been before; nor is it from ex eessire low rates, f«r the companies are getting very good terms but it is da* wholly and entirely to the increase in the number of fires and fire losses. This is a 6 erious matter to tha whole commu¬ nity. The mere failure of insurance companies to pay dividend interest* only a small number of persocs—th* stockholder* and employe* of the com¬ pany; but mi increased prevalence of tires and great destruction of property involves tbe whole people, iu gmt/»] l arui in P ar, iculsr. If a hundred mil - j .j on d 0 ]] ;1 rfi 0 f property are swept away (every ye.r by fire, it is just so wealth lost to tlie country, anil such tosses must necessarily compel ths un¬ derwriters to increase their rates and levy an additional tax on every property holder. The extraordinary increase that has lately occurred in fires, therefore, <le mands serious attention. Why is it? We build our houses as carefully and as safe against fire as years a^o, probably safer, for iron and brick buildings are every day , taking . .. tlie .. place , of , wooden . ZJ ones We verl have elficZ large ZleZtSZ expensive com- 2 and ,“ th re el. is certainty »o — maiked t crense in in.-endiansm. And, finally, ihere have been no large tires lately to swell our losses and yet these losses amount already this year np to Septem¬ ber 1 to $ 62,500 ooti— a fifth of (he cotton crop. A g’ance over the origin ot she fires ), ave occurred dnriDg the past \ear will probably explain the matter. There f llg been a wonderful increase in ti e fires due to carelessness ami neglect There seems to tie a very general misun¬ derstanding on 1 Vie part Cif persons in¬ sured of their responsibilities to the un¬ derwriters and general public. They seem to feel that, Kfter they have paid thfcir premiums, the insurance comnany takes absolute and complete control of their property and agrees to guard it againht all danger from fire; they are freed from all responsibility; and all they have to do is to collect the insu¬ rance when their property has been de¬ stroyed. Such fi selfish policy should not he encouraged, ami those who believe in this idea should ba taught that legally aro responsible for losses from neg and carelessness. They should take the same precautions as if they had no policy at all upon their property; and few do this. If the present feeling of irresponsibility continues—if the peo¬ who insure their property continue believe that the company, not they. see to its “ofety— the present con of aflaiis will continue; heavy from fbe, necessatily followed by iutrea c ir; insurant;- rates These people wi”, iL.^fu.c, ha"e to a fax for their own carelessness, if do not altogether lose their insu¬ by gross neglect of the most neces¬ precautions against fire.—[New Or¬ Times-Democrat. 1 HE QUEEN CITY BARER-SHOP :o: Cousorial Attist in €i]'ar§e :o: - Bait cutting in the neatest and new est style, Shaving, Sha; pooning Dyeing executed with neatness and dispatch. £3TLocatt-«l in the Night bnilning first floor on the left upstairs. ■racincKie r to™’ \j being Meg!;; Scale, E onc-ninth it# b aetnAl eue.
