THE WEEKLY, R.J. GUINN, •EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR $1,25 PER ANNUM. fentoredat the Conyers Poxt OUico as second class mail matter. Advertising: rates made known on Demand job Work Neatly and Promptly Executed. The manufacture of cotton goods In the South has increased 40 per cent within the past two years. The democrats of South Carolina, in state convention at Columbia, heartily and thoroughly approved President Cleveland’s tariff message. There lias been no break thus far in the harmony of State Democrat¬ ic conventions and the discord of State Republican conventions. It lias been generally accepted as true that Hon. H. II. Carlton, rep¬ resentative in Congress, would have no opposition iii the approaching election, hut from the present ten¬ dency of affairs it is almost certain that a candidate will offer against him. Hon Sam Barnett, of Wilkes, has offered to make the race under certain conditions, it is said, and there are several other Richmonds who are willing to enter the lists This article from the Sandersville Progress, wo most heartily in dorse:— Hon. Patrick Walsh is an honest. upright man, a good democrat, ex¬ ceptionally pure as a politician. His difference of opinion with the President and the majority of the party,on the tariff question, unfitted Aim perhaps as a del igato to St, Louis, hut does not merit/the donif iuant, faction would seemingly im. pose upon him. His fidelity to tlie party has certainly been less waver¬ ing than that of others who now are honored. This hub bub about Hon. Pat¬ rick Walsh is all a big pack of “stuff.” I’at Walsh is no truer to the Democratic party than thous¬ ands of others in this state. The cry that is now being raised in his behalf is only an indirect way of creating a sentiment against Mr. Colquitt. But the people of Geor¬ gia will not allow this. They have spoken in favor of Mr. Col¬ quitt and when the proper time c nnes they will do it again. The people must keep their eyes open to the issues this year. 11“ there is any chance to heat Mr. Colquitt for the senate it will he seized, and then the cry will go forth that the protectionists have won even in Georgia, See to it that the men you send to the Legislature are right, on this question. Unles they are they cannot ; c in unison with the democratic party under its pres¬ ent leadership. Some Sensible Fun. Hon. S, 8. Cox takes off the ar¬ guments of the protectionists in fine style, lie rivals them in their ability to form conclusions. He argues: “England has free trade; Eng¬ land has low wages. Ergo, free trade produces low wages. “Again the United stales has pro¬ tection; the United Suites has high wages. Therefore protection pro¬ duces high wages. “England has a house of lords; England has low wages. Conclu¬ sion ; the lords make low wages Tne United States is infested with tramps; the United States has high wages. Therefore tramps make wages high. “Ireland has no snakes: Ireland has low wages. Algal, snakes make high wages. “Russia has high protection; Ru-siahas low wages. Therefore, protection makes wages low. “Turkey—well gentlemen excuse for my reference? Well, Turkey has a low tariff —8 per cent. Turkey has the Koran, Therefore the Ko fau makes wages low, The Dellahtful Liquid Laxative.
