article. concec„in e or directed to
the farmers of the county, and as
An humble private citizen and far¬
mer we beg to offer a protest.
Now we have no objections to any¬
body saying kind things about the
farmers and indeed these things do
tickle our vanity no little, but we
would like to ask in all seriousness
and candor; Are the farmers of
this country simpletons and fools,
that they must be lectured and ad¬
vised from one year’s end to anotli
e, by some one-horse editor who
perhaps never raised a bale of cot¬
ton, a barrel of corn or a bushel of
potatoes in his life? Is such a
course not a sad comment upon
the practical sense of the farmers
and the self conceited egotism of
such editors? What do they know
about farming and what farmers
should do? In practical knowl¬
edge pertaining to farming how
would such editors compare with
J. H. Almand, D. C, Goode, W. J.
■Williams, B. E. McDonald. P. H.
White, W. H. Camp J. W. Banal
ton, John Bonner, Ik S, Situs, II.
J. Maddox, Madison Tucker, II. W.
Hammock, J. M. Huff and hund¬
reds of others just such men as our
county has? Yet they hesitate to
give advice upon such subjects
even when asked. It won’t do Mr.
Solid South, its taffy too sweet to
catcli sensible men—it- may do for
children.
Again, we hear a great deal about
trusts and monopolies and the bur¬
dens thereof upon the farmer, all
of which we most sincerely deplore,
hut are the farmers all the people
that arc affected by them? What
of our merchants, lawyers, doctors,
smiths, mechanics, artisans and
others?
Again, we hear a great deal about
the merchant pricing the farmers
produce when he buys it as well
as tho goods be gives in
Can the merchant afford to
more for cotton than he can get
it? or can he afford to sell
goods for less than what he
for them? Are these things
priced to the merchant?
Now brother farmers, let us
grumbling, and to elevate the
fession to which we belong and
give it dignity, let us frown
cciuieti., iinii) all men and
of men tiiat talk to us and about
ag if we were their wardens r
capable v f looking after their
mlerest. Practical Fasmeil
