KNOW HIM BY SIGHT. Cor, Enkrpihe. Hon. W. JL. Most of us know Jeek of the county of Rock i’ale. To those who do not, we «'esire to say, tnat he is a very t-ocial and clever man. He has 1 ©presented his county in. the legislature and once served i his district in the state senate. «)f course he has never been ac¬ cused of possessing an overa¬ bundance of wisdom, and ought not to be blamed for being a little weak at times, in the up¬ per-story, for this is a misfor¬ tune rather than a fault—and should be pardoned rather than condemned. At present he is proudly posing as one of the selfconstituted leaders of a peculiar organization known as theTeoples Party, and the frisky way in whtc.h he prance around, reminds his former Democratic brethren of a very small boy riding a stick horse, three weeks after the cicus has pulled up stakes and departed. The Col¬ onel has ever been our friend and we cannot find bile enough on our ‘liver, or, gall sufficient in our heart, to abuse and vilify him becaui je chances to get turned upside down andjis being bewitched away from the cherished traditions and time honored principles of the dear old Democratic party which has alwaas and at all times been the advocate and champion of right andjjustic between man and man—whose watchwt rd and battle-cry for almost a cen¬ tury has been, “Equal rights to all, and special privileges to none. Col. Peek very eroueoesly imag. ines that he is a forcible speaker a great and important person¬ age charity demands tnat he be permitted to labor a litlle while longer under this fascinating HaPueination, for it him feel gooj, does no one any harm, and deceives nobody. In a recent interview publish¬ ed in the Atlanta Constitution, Col. R. T. Nesbitt, Commission¬ er of Agriculture, urged upon our farmers the necessity of reducing the acreage in cotton, audjof adopting the best meth¬ ods to make their farms self sustaining. He advised them to put in ample provision crop, and thus insure our surplus at home. Also to plant renovating crop of peas, clover and grass. Col. Nesbitt stated with emphasis the cost of cotton as a crop was far beyond the price received for it, and, illustrating with the figures of the experi¬ ment Station and Col. Corput’s experience as published in the Southern Cultitvator, he pointed out that not only must there be a reduction of acreage' hut by careful preparation and upbuil¬ ding of the land, a reduction of the land, a reduction of the cost of making might also, in time, be effected, That the Commissioner should be criticised for giving such timely advice seems strange ,yet in some quartern a determined effort has been made to miscon sture and misrepresent his posi¬ tion on this question. To us it seems right and proper that the experience of successful farmers and the world. Indeed, we undersand that the Agricultural Department is required by law to publish the latter. Commenting on this the Ma con Telegraph says: “Col. Cor put’s experience ought not have a particle of influence on the price of cotton, now or in the immediate future, but it v Ought , , to . . be great , value to the a termers of the South for the tewpn it teaches.” It would seem that the reduc¬ ed acreage and the falling off in the use of commerscial fertilizers has had some effect on the mar¬ ket, for notwithstanding the larg surplus on hand, cotton has advanced £ of a cent in the last month, with an upward tendecy in futures. In another column appe >rs resolutions from Mt. Zion Alliance endorsing Col. Nesbitt. ®oe© © © ©© © © The malleat PU 1 In tha W orld!
