BISS LAYONA GLENN WHITES AN IN
TEBE8TING LETTER FROM FAB AWAY
BRAZIL TO MRS. H. QUIGG IN WHICH
BHE GIVES VIVID DESCIPTIONS OF
THE MODES AND MANNERS OF
THE HEATHEN PEOPLE.
PlHACICABA, BRAZIL, Dec. 22, , 94
My dear Mrs. Quigg:
1 suppose you think tiiat l
am very lax in keeping my prom
lae to write to you, but if you
•Onld be in my place a little while
and draggle with a foreign I..
guage that, seemingly, has no
rales *,or regulations, but which
M ob native Mem. to take th. lib
arty ol pronouncing, TOtln/t and
wing, generally as he pleases,
saswering all quesstions as to the
raisons, or rules for construction,
Biiage, etc., with an indescribable
little shrug of the shoulders, wave
of the hand and “hao sei," (“I do
not know”) as if that were all that
vM necessary, and as if they were
surprised that you had the audac¬
ity to think they knew anything
•boat their language, orfthere was
ssy thing that needed an explana¬
tion. If you could try this, to
ssy nothing of the other ilnties
that have to be attended to, you
vonld not wonder that I make a
poor letter writer. I cannot tell
you the nnmber of times I have
Sst down to write to you aud was
interrupted by some one, and not
get back uutil I had something
slse to do. Thus the time goes
by.
And it is only three to Christ¬
mas I I cannot realize it at all,
for it is mid summer and every¬
thing is fresh and green. The
flowers are blooming profusely,
the strawberries are in full blast
K
and the grape-vines are loaded
with magnificent bunches of white
and purple grapes; bean vines full
of fresh young beans, and corn
j«it ready to tassel and pineapples
just turning.
Is it wondorfol that I do not
realize that it is actually the 22nd
of December ?
It brought before me, however,
wery forcibly and p’actieally to¬
day when 1 had to spend the day
in the kitchen baking cuke, etc.,
for it. The Brazilian cooks know
•othiug about our kind of cook
ing, especially in that line, so
when we wish anything like
' homo-eating,” we have to take
ourselves to the kitchen and cook
it—and I feel like thanking moth¬
er every day for teaching me the
,'calinary art, ” for I am indepen¬
dent} ou that line. However, the
food is not so materially different
from what we have at home as
•ire would imagine, especially IJin
the missionary homes and schools
You can get most of the things
that we have at home, and can
teach the cooks how to cook most
things as we do. It seems,
that they cannot learn to make
hiscuit. but if they did, I don’t be
lieve that I could eat them, for
they (I mean the cook*) don’t
know the first principle of oleanli
ness. I know that uothi/tg we eat
ia clean, but I am thriving on the
dirt so far. 1 am fleshier than 1
•T«r was, I thick. I really like
most of the Brazilian dishes, and
it it. pleases them <b.t so much «Jt to of know th. J

no one could have understood it
if they had beaid it, which they
could not do on account of the
band which played all during the
ceremony, JThen he had finish -
ed he turned to the couple, who
had at one point in tbe ceremony
been told by an assistant to kneel
upon two satin pillows placed
upon the floor for that purpose,
aud lifting his robe, let them
“kiss the hem of his garment !’’
Then he made the sign of the
cross in the sir above them, bless¬
ed them and bade them rise. Af
tliis they went into the parlor
wharf the bride aud groom took
tke placo of honor, which is a so¬
fa ft the end of the room. The
gwBBts were seated on two straight
lines of chairs extended lrom eith¬
er side of the sofa down the whole
length of the room, that is the
fomale guests. The men went
into another room. This is al¬
ways the oustom they say. I sat
and looked at that one lone man
in that room full of women, with
no way of escape except to walk
down between those two lines,
aud it reminded me of the Indians
manner of torture, “Running the
gauntlet!" 1 thought that it
must take a b ave man to marry
in Brazil. As soon as the cere
inony was over, the priest left.
It is amazing the way they hold
the people in superstition, and the
way they tell lies on the Protes¬
tants is rediculous. Not long ago
there was a woman in town sick,
and a protestsut had visited bet;
one of the priests said she was
possessed of a devil that proceed¬
ed from the " evil eye ” of the
Protestant, and that for so much
money he would free her from it.
So the put some salt upon tbe
brick floor in the shape of a crosSj
and burnt it, calling upon Mary
to remove the evil spirit. Think
of that from a man who professes
to be a spiritual leader! The wo
