Senator Clay.
It is now United States
ator-elect Clay—we have
ca;. i «] another gubernatorial
elcction —and the people are
satisfied.
After over a week of caucus
ing Clay was nominated last
Monday evening. The contest
had at that time virtually Bar
rowed to Howell and Clay
it was confidently expected that
Clay would win out on the next
ballot. Tltis proved true and
the contest ended.
Mr Clay has always been an
ardent democrat and has render¬
ed valuable service to the party,
especially within the past four
years, he having been chairman
of the State Executive JOommit
tee during that time.
Mr. Clay is one of the most
worthy and able young men in
the state and will make a record
inthe Senate of which all Georgi¬
ans will be proud.
His term will begin March 4,
1897, and will hold for six years,
The latest reports from Cuba
are setisational and news
the seat of war is sougnt after
eagerly. It is rumored that
General Weyior has been
wounded, and that he is liable
to die of blood poisoning.
The insurgents.it is claimed,
are more than, lidding their own
and are confident of winning
the victory before the new year
dawns. It is given out that
sixty Texas rangers, beaing
rifles that throw a ball five
mifed, are doing great service
in behalf of the insergents.
They are paid a thousand dol¬
lars for every Spanish officer
they kill and the man who
brings down Gen. Weyler is
assured ol five thousand. 1 he
insurgents have had a hard time
hut it now seems tuat they are
in good spirits and confidently
expect to win out.
The people will get down to
business in 1897 and the coun¬
try will fairly hum. If there is
any virtue in a republican ad :
ministration the people will be!
glad to feel its exhileratiug ef—:
feels as speedily as possible. I

mass meeting was held in the

and Geo. W. Gleaton and Mess¬
rs. John M - Day and Wm.
M. Richardson were unani¬
mously elected delegates to the
convention, held in Atlanta on
the 18th, to nominate Supreme
Court Judges. The delegate
were uniustrncted. The sense
of the mass meeting was that
the county would cheerfully
and heartily approve the nom¬
inations, and indorse the ac¬
tions of the delegates.
The expression of the mass
meeting being now recited, I
wish to urge upon eveiy voter
in the county to cast his ballot
in Dec. 5th, 1890, for the four
distinguished gentlemen who
were nominated,as the following
brief expressive remarks assure
us, as contained in the resolu¬
tion by the convention.
Judge Longley of Troup offer¬
ed the following resolution
which was adopted -
