Conyers Leading.
As a market Conjer9 is
spreading her fame to the very
doors oi other towns.
Lasfc Tuesday a gentleman liv
ing very near McDonough, and
who never before came to Con
yers on business, for an exper
iment brought two bales of cot
tou to our town and sold at a
good price. Afterwards we
heard him in conversation with
one of our citizens and what he
said makes a splendid adver
tiseraent for our town.
The bulk of Ins cotton crop is
stored in a warehouse at Mc¬
Donough and, according to his
statement, if he had it back at
his home nc would bring it to
Conyers. He thinks it would
pay him well to do it although
he lives nearly twenty miles
from here.
He remarked that he knew
but few of our people, however,
those he had inet he was greatly
pleased with, and intended to
meet others.
He was also impressed with the
wonderful spirit of competition
that abounds in every line of
business in Conyers, and mar¬
veled at the low prices prevail¬
ing.
The gentleman was well
pleased with his trip and in¬
tends to come again.
We have repeatedly contend¬
ed that farmers for thirty miles
around Conyers should come to
this market, They can save
money by trading here. Our
merchants ate the best buyers
the whole country afiords—they
are strictly up to date in the
mercant’le world and the com¬
petition is such that the custom
et reaps the chief benefit. Our
merchants are in business with
a vow of doing all they can—
they must do this in order to
prosper on the close profit plan.
Another advantage our mar¬
ket holds out to farmers is the
great demand here for country
produce. Anything a farmer
can produce, from a coon hide
up finds a ready market here at
the best prices.
There is no dispute over the
facts we have related here and
we confidently believe that the
time is not far distant when the
reputation this town is making
will bring trade from much
greater distances than we have
already mentioned.
In the meantime we are lead
ing.

There is, to our thinking, a
vast amount of sympathy bemg
wasted upon the Cuban insur¬
gents. They may be having a
bard time of it but if we are to
credit recent reports the Spauisb
soldiers are being constantly
routed and beaten on every
hand. The Cubans are war¬
ring against great odds and
will ultimately achieve a great
victory. Weyler is in a power¬
less position with hundreds of
thousands of troops around
him. He is a big bullying bluff
with a mammoth yellow streak
running along his back that
keeps him in Havanna or in a
bomb proof private car. The
insurgents are comparatively
safe with Weyler in charge of
Spain’s army, but defenseless
women and children would do
well to hide out.
Gongress will convene on
the first Monday in December
and this will give Cleveland his
last opportunity to recognize
the cause of the Cubans, No
one really expects him to do
such a thing, however.
