Next Tuesday will be observed
in Georgia and many other
states as the anniversary of Gen-j
eral Robert E; I.ee's death:

People nave almost quit talk

out of their troubles. I

items of importance which
would be worth to him perhaps
a hundred times the subsenp

Montgomery M. Folsom’s ar
tide in the Macon Telegraph on
hie dead father, entitled -‘A
Sad Retrospect”, was a tender
touching and beautiful tribute.
It required a man of genius,
with a big heart, to write it.
Hoke Shith went to Washing¬
ton, last week, to attend the
dinner given by tho presidet toj
the cabinet. The newspapers
and politicians of both parties
unite in the opinion that Mr.
Smith is one of the ablest men
in the country • He will doubt
less be a prominent figure in
state and national politics for ;
many years to come.
Hon ■ W. C. Glenn,of Atlanta
made a speech last week be - i
fore the congressional commit
tee which is investigating the
Watson-Black contested election i
case- Colonel - Glenn represent¬
ed Watson- He is the most eh -
gant lawyer at the Georgia bar
nod has a fine practice . The
professional politicians and
rings are against him, but they
cannot keep a man of his geui
us in the back-ground.
It may be truly said that Sen¬
ator Yancey Carter has stirred
op things iu Georgia’s Judiciary
that is proving a revelation to
the people. The evidence that
has gone to the investigating
committee in the cases of
Judges Sweat and Reese has
been, so far, rich and racy, and
will not add to the reputation
of either gentleman in point of
morality and sobriety. What
the result of this investigation
will be we cannot fortell, but
cne thing is plain to us iu the
caseses now pending, i. e., these
geulletneu have not always and
». all times lent dignity 'to
positions they hold This
must be apparent to the leas'
critical observer.

Bryan’s speech in Chicago
is now ready for the dissecting
table of his enemies.
The Cuban patriots are hov
'S around Havana and the
great (?) W eyler sneaks out of
city to sleep. Another Ma
must have sprung up or
else the spirit of the late patri¬
ot lingers, loth to give up the
battle.
What line will be pursued by
the prosecution before the iu
vestigating committee in the
case of Judge Gobei? With the
searchlights Carter has em¬
ployed up to date one would
not be surprised at almost any
new turn he may give matters.
---
Tom Delk has at last told the
story of the killing of Sheriff
Gwynn and it is indeed a tlnill
ing story- Ile insists that Tom
Landlord fired the shot that
ended the life of the sheriff.
He also contends that his father
was not in the house at the time
of the shooting. Tom has only
a few more davs on earth and
hig stateraent that a]1
knQW the trU6 facts in
the case.
What is the matter with turn¬
ing the X-rays on the Georgia
Judiciary? What is the X-ray
for if not io disclose hidden se¬
crets? We might employ this
new method of examination to
great advantage in the case of
Judge Sweat.
The papers throughout the
entire country are taking more
or less interest in the anti-trust
law recently enacted by our leg
idatnre. It is generally com¬
mended. Our esteemed fellow
citizen, Mr. II- Y. McCord, as
an outside individual, labored
for the passage of the bill and

Every ittelligent person should
tubscribe to his home paper and
should take at least one general
newspaper which covers the news
of the world. This the Cons itutiou
does better than any southern week¬

has now the largest circulation of
any weekly newspaper published on
the western hemisphere attests to
its popularity. It publishes 156,
000 copies every week and go's imo
more homes in the southern an I
western states than any week y

The magnificient Piano now
on exhibition at the M. Schulz
Co’s, office will be drawu for
and some one will get it for a
mere trifle. One ticket which
was drawn out of a hat by Tax
Collector Cook, sealed by Sher¬
iff Austin and placed in the
county safe by Ordinary Helms,
will draw the Piano—the tickets
run from 1 to 125 in series of
A, B,C and D . Those drawing
tickets in either series correspon¬
ding in number with the one
drawing the piano will get a
one-third interest in a hand¬
some $90,00 organ. This is a
mutual plan for some one to
get an elegant $400 Piano for a
few cents.
The Rockmart Slate is a new
Weekly paper published at
Rockmar-, Ga., by Messrs Edge
& King. The paper is a bright
one and we wish it success.
Montgomery M. Folsom who,
fo' - the past year, has done such
splendta work on the Rome
Tribune, will leave that paper
in a few days and accept a po
sotiou with The Evening Con¬
stitution. Mr. Folsom is one
among Georgia’s best newspa¬
per writers and the new paper
is fortunate to secure his servi¬
ces.
The Atlinta Journal now
promises to issue a Sunday
morning edition. Verily, the
rivalry between the Journal and
Constitution paseth all un¬
derstanding.

colleges in the state. She was
educated for the position she
uow holds. Her example is
worthy of imitation.”
