short. Many of our farmers have
had to buy corn tho past few

cents per bushel it comes mighty
high to them. The crop this year
is very promising.
The number of casualties from
lightning tho past few weeks is
really alarming. Each day has
recorded some death or some seri¬
ous injury either to man or ani¬
mals in Georgia, from these elec

people are becoming more careful

SUNDAY SCHOOL CEL¬
EBRATION.
The annual meeting of Rockdale
Sunday School Association at
Smyrna was attended and enjoyed
by a large concourse of people last
Thursday. The inclemency of the
morning seemed not to detract
from the interest in the occasion.
The addresses were of a highly in¬
teresting and instructive order.
That of Rev. W T Granada was
well delivered and contained depth
of thought. It was happily re¬
ceived by the audience
Rev. J. W. Stoxes spoke inter¬
estingly and instructively and
pleased his hearers.
Dr. Quigg gave a simple, practi¬
cal address: “Home government.’
His talk was characteristic of the
man and, hence, wenthime to the
hearts of his hearers.
The dinner and social recess
w r as as pleasant as the sunshine
which greated us at that hour.
The contest singing for the
Banner w : as pronounced the best
ever heard on on- of these occa
sions. The Banner for the best
singing by infant classes was awar¬
ded to Union school.
The contest for the School Ban¬
ner rvas heated.
All the schools sang well. The
Banner was won by the Conyers
school for the harmony and equal
distribution of the different parts.
The day and occasion will be
long remembered by all who were
present and it is hoped that all
the schools of the county will
part 1 in these celebrations
ter.

DEATH.
Tins little baby of Mr. atkl Mrs.
Tom White, who reside n nr town,
died last. Thursday evening. All
of their children have had whoop¬
ing cough and are recovering, ex¬
cept this little one that has been
relieved of all suffering and called
into a brighter life.
The death of the little one brings
great sorrow to the parents who
have the sympathy of many good
friends.
HAD DOG.
A mad dog in the neighborhood
of Messrs. Geo. Hollingsworth and
J T Tucker bit several cows and
dogs last Saturday. Mr. Hollings¬
worth saw the dog bite tho cows
and has already killed one of his
that was bitten The
other animals bitten have been
fastened up to await develope
ments. The dogs bitten have in
most instances been shot.
It would be advisable for people
to keep a lookout for rabid dogs at
this time as this is the season when
the rabies are most common.
Coitiycrs Voltatears Back.
Under command of Maj. J. R.
Irwin, Capt. D. W. Almand and
Lieut. J. H. Turner, the Volun¬
teers arrived home last Sunday at
noon from Camp Dyson, at Wash¬
ington, Ga., after spending a week
there.
The boys report a fine time. The
trip was beneficial td every mem¬
ber of the command.
The Volunteers niadea splendid
record. The Company was select¬
ed to occupy the most prominent
position in the special formations
which was a high compliment not
only to the Com pa;. >\ but to Capt¬
ain Almand and Lieutenant Tur¬
ner,
Mnj, Irwin, who was in com¬
mand of tb 3 first battalion was in
command of the Regiment during
the absence of the command¬
ing officer and led the charge in
the sham battle. Too much cred¬
it cannot be given him for tho
manner in which he controlled the
regiment on the above stated oc¬
casion. We judge from the daily
papers that this was one of the
most realistic sham battles ever
fought in Georgia, and was wit¬
nessed by thousands of people.
The people if Washington spar¬
ed no effort for the pleasure of the
troops during the encampment.
Thodecipline of the camp was
perfect and wo are proud to learn
that not one of the boys from here
entered the prison tent. None of
the boys were sick while away and
all returned much improved by
the week’s work.
The officers of the Company re¬
quests us to express their grateful
ness tot he people of Conyers for
favors extended the Company. Al¬
so their appreciation of the atten¬
tions of the vouug ladies of the
city extended the Volunteers upon
their return home.
