The ordinaries of the state have
been assembled in convention at
Indian Spring this week. Our or¬
dinary has been a little too busy
with county matters to get off to
enjoy the outing and social inter¬
course of the official gathering.
On Thursday evening the Social
•Circle baseball team was enter¬
tained by some of the young peo¬
ple of the town at the armory.
The occasion was very plesant to
the young people and the visiting
young gentlemen duly appreciated
the courtesies shown them.
Ned Cunningham who shot Dock
Ham about two months ago and
made his escape, came up this
week and surrendered to Sheriff
Austin. He succeeded in making
a bond and is now enjoying tem¬
porary freedom.
The Conyers colored baseball
nine crossed bats at Oxford Thurs¬
day ’»ith the team there. The
deplorable score of 82 to 2 in favor
of Oxford shows the Conyers nine
to 1 e sadly in need of practice or

Another fishing party was form¬
ed in Conyers Tuesday and hied it
self away to Sim's Mill on South
river. The start or getting away
of these parties is always more
boisterous than the return or get¬
ting in. Wo are never able to
learn the number or size of the fish
caught.
On r eturning from near Conyers
last Friday morning, with his wife
and baby in the buggy with him,
Mr. E L Almand had to cross a
small stream beyond Yellow River
which was very much swollen and
out of its banks. There was a
washout in the run of the stream
into which his hone fell, and he
bad to get out into water over
waist deep. Fortunately he got
out without serious damage but
had a frightful experience.—So¬

yers people attended the Sunday
School Celebration at Bethel yes¬
terday. The intense heat kept
many at home,

Prof. Steven Gleaton will open
his school at Magnet next Monday.
He has a very good sohool at that
place and is giving splendid satis¬
faction as a teacher.

byterian church Sunday was in

Mrs. White, nee Mias Mollie
Richards, who lias been with her
sister, Mrs. T. H. Bryans, for sev¬
eral weeks, was called to her home
at Grtenvil 0 , S. C., this week on
account of the illness of her bus
band.
It has been rumored hero that,
the Kentucky Refining Co. had
sold its oil mill property here to
the Virginia Chemical Co. We
have inquired into the matter and
find the rumor to be without foun¬
dation. There lias been no sale
and it is not at all likely there
will beany.
Mr. A A Lemon, of McDonough,
has entered suit against the South
ern railway f 01 $ 10,COO on account
of the death of his little daughter,
and he and his children have be¬
gun suit for $40,COO on account of
the death of Mrs, Dora, wife of
Mr. A A Lemon. The wife and
daughter met death in the wreck
in the Southern yards near Atlan¬
ta some weeks ago.

Miss Anne Stewart Ethridge
has been elected and has accepted
the chair of English Literature in
the Virginia College, of Roanoke.
\’a., which position she filled in a
most acceptable manner to the
management of the college for two
terms, ’04 to ’06, and they are
fortunate in securing her services
again. Miss Annie will leave here
next Tuesday for New Y’ork and
will remain there until tho open
ing of the college io September.
She visits New York partly to
witness the first rendition of the
Drama, “Miranda of the Balcony,’
recently dramatized by a former
Yassor college-mate and special
friend of hers, Mrs. Ann Crawford
Flexner,(nee Miss Ann Crawford,)

Mrs. J. A. Guinn and children

ited friends here last Sunday.
Cotton will socn begin to open
in this section and ’ere long the
announcement of the appearance
of the first new bale in the state
will be made.
A protracted meeting was held
at Union church, in this county,
this week. The pastor, Rev. Mack
Fakes, was assisted in the services
by Rev. Mr. Troutman.
Mrs. Eliza Stewart, of Roanoke,
Va., is in the city to spend some
time with relatives. She has many
friends here who enjoy her annual
vi-its to her old home town.
Some half dozen Conyeregentle
men took in the races at Piedmont
Park, in Atlanta, last Saturday.
They went purely to enjoy the
races and not to speculate on the
result.
Mr. Emery Granade and charm¬
ing sister, Miss Minnie, also Miss
Annie Lee YVillingham and Miss
Ocie YVardlaw. of Conyers were at
the picnic Saturday. YY r e are glad

Major Bob Ir vin, of Conyers,
attended the late encampment of
the Third Georgia regiment, at
Washington, and was in command
of the camp most of the time,
owing to the sickness of Col. Ush
er Thomason. Bob is a finoofficer,
a genial and good fellow, and we
hope to see him wearing the star
u f a brigadier general some
on fetar.
Mi. II Y McCord has had some
splendid improvements made up¬
on his handsome residence. The
interior has been beautified and
when the work has been finished
the home will be in splendid con
dition. Mr. W U YVnllis has had
the improvements in hand.
Soveral Conyers people spent
Tuesday at Snapping Shoals in
the enjoyment of the annual cele¬
bration at this lovely place. Th'i
day was propitious for such an oc
casion nnd all present
seemed to enjoy themselves in the
fullest measure.
Rev. Mr. Pack, of Atlanta,
preached at the Baptist church
here last Sunday and at night, the,’,
pastor, Rev. B. J \V. Graham,
being engaged in a meeting at
Jonesboro. The sermons of Rev.
Mr. Puck were greatly enjoyed by
the audiences. He is very strong
in the faith as was evidenced by
his discourses.
Mr. S. II. Wood, brother of Rev.
J H, Wood, will in a short time
move from Conyers to YY'inder.
He has purchased tho business of

some weeks ago that he thought
of locating at Winder and from
the above item it will be seen that
he has closed a trade for the busi¬
ness there. YVe regret the loss of
him as a citizen of Conyers but
wish him well in his new field.

much pleasure to all present.
