The ed'toi of the Eatonton Broad

hog. his conclusion was that, the hog
had ’eaten up all the agricultural products
of Newton and adjoining counties, which
accounted for the meagre exhibition.—
He says the Floral Hall was about the
size of federal ducket coop, and a pack

evidently feels that he iUus “hoged” out
of the money he paid fit the gate to see
the show.
The managers of Brick Store fair say
that “the Conyers fire company and band
saw everything in the fair ground with
out paying gate money, thereby obtaiH

“everything” they saw, suiiitiifed up,
amounted to a “h^g,” they also saw a

of this matter.
First. As to the contract between »he
Pair Association and the Fire Company,
this letter will speak ter itself.
H. Conyers/}a., Oct.. 8th, 1878 .
L. Graves, Esq,, DearSir.—I wrote
you some time ago in regard to our fire
company coming to your fair, but have
rec’d no answer yet. At a meeting of
the company last night, I was ordered
to
wme a ^n. We propose to
come
to your lair, bridging our engine and
furnishing you the brass band of this
J'lace cn the day we com- |ree pf charge,
provided you give us the | 50 ,C 0 premi¬
um if no oiher company comes, and if
another comes we will contest for the
premium.
We are well cqutped IT and uniformed
s
and will add ttiore than the $ 50,00 to
youi fair. Y\ ill come any day you say.
I he fair at this place makes ns tliia of¬
fer. Please write to us immediately and
state what you will offer us provided
no other company comes.
We assure you that you will lose noth
i fl S hy it, but on the other hand gain.
v Iiespecthilly,
A. P. Tommey, Sec'ty Tallulah Fire Co.
Before this letter was replied to and
while the proposition was under conshK
elation. A, P. Tommey the writer, came
down in person, urged the request, and
in the presence of several witnesses
promised iu the name of the company to
furnish the hand to play as pheh during
the day ds the Fair Association desired;
even to 20 timps, (the very words.) \Tp on
this assurance the premium was o ffei'ed
that ddy.
More than this—during the Rockdale
Fair, the Eider Harp approached Capt.
McConnell, and stated that some misun
ders land ing existed between the fire
company and the band as to the contract
made, Gapt. McConnell at once reques¬
ted that the leader cf the band and as
many of the company as ^’cssible be goN
ten together in order that a clear under¬
standing be had. This was done, and in
the jfi;tsenc<5 of a number of the company
"ml some member, of the hand hh read
the above copied letter, repeated lorn - •
mev’s iney s verbal vei D.U contract conn act and amts said ud, “Gentle* txen‘ le^ I
men, if you are not willing to corne and
carry out the programme as agreed upon,
we request now that you do not bring
your engine on our grounds ” Alter
consultation they said they w T ou’d come.
Second. As to what tianspirtd ou the
fair grounds. I c
'Hie ^ Fair Association in good faith put
the firemens display and music in the pro¬
gramme, i Thursday, had the water haul*
ed at much labor, and then at 10 o’clock
re quested that the baud play. To our
astonishment this met with a prompt, re
fusal. Every effort of persuasion was
used to induce a compliance ' with the
contract, and after the regular pro
grama of the day hdd wiiiied on tliem for
half an hour the Viand peremptorialy re
fused to comply with their contract. The
executive committee , had , then , to change
the ent re programme. During the hour
taken for dinner after the best portion of
the day had gone, a proposition was
made U cany out the contract if the
$50,00 was paid. This was refused sim
ply because the chief object had in view
iii offering the large premium had been
defeated by the conduct of the band. The
malicious and abusive language of the
card we pass by without remarks.
We believe the Fire Company has
among its members—men who are gen
tlemen, and we are satisfied that they
will not after reflection, iudorse the in
justice attempted in the card.
Respectfully,
Managers of Brick Store Fair.
