A large number of papers are del

Great care should be exercised in

of the interested parties yesterday.
A man bad agreed with a friend that
if he drank any whisky during this
year, the friend might lay him over a
barrel and whip him with a board.
Unmindful of this, the poor fellow
got drunk a few day# since and his
friend, Shy'ock like, insisted on his

Thomas was released from custody
at the Coal Creek coal mines on yes
tsrday, having served out his sen¬
tence. He passed through the city
last night en route to Nashville, his
former home.
There is quite a romance connects
ed with Thomas' imprisonment. In
1875 he killed Joe Deal, a dark at
the Maxwell House, for insulting a
young lady to whom he was engaged
to be married. He was sentenced to
the penitentiary for 21 years, but his
sentence was commuted lo ten years
by Governor Porter, and again re¬
duced oa account of good behaviour.
Thomas has been at work in the
coal mines since he was sentenced,
with the exception of a few weeks,
when he worked en the Cincinnati
Southern railroad for bis health,which
became very precarious on account
of confinement. Thomas says he is
going to marry the young lady whose
honor he defended at such a dear coet
as soon as he succeeded in getting
work. She has remaiuedtrue to him
during his imprisonment, writing to
him and often sending him many del
icaoies and sweet remembrances. He
is a man of neat aopearauce. about
35 years of age und has a manly lace
and a clear bright eye.
