Monroe County Ministerial Association to sponsor observance
The National Day of Prayer is May 1
and the Monroe County Ministerial
Association will lead a special prayer
service at noon on the courthouse square
in Forsyth at noon.
Prayer will be offered for local, state,
national and world leaders as well as for
God's world and the people who inhabit
it. Everyone of every denomination is
encouraged to join in the prayer
Thursday at noon.
Pastor’s Column
Prayer even helps stubborn men
B oth of these sto
ries involve men
who enjoyed ridi
culing the church
and things spiri
tual. Both had
sons devoted to the
faith.
The first
father's son
worked with us
as a summer
intern. He
deeply loved
his father
but was
grieved that he took joy in
slamming prayer and
faith. The son reported
that his father call prayer
"foolish," "something
upon which he would
never waste his time."
Now, the father was a
coal miner, and the sum
mer that his son worked
with us, that was a cave-
in. Along with six other
men, this father was
trapped.
Thankfully, after several
days of heroic effort, the
rescuers freed the men,
all of them. The son was
waiting at the mine, and
as soon as possible, he
asked his father what
he did while he was
down there.
"We prayed the whole
time," he whispered.
Prayer seems hard
wired to the trou
bled soul.
THE SECOND
father had a son who was
15 when we met. The boy
accepted Christ and
requested Baptism. I
arranged to talk with the
father, who was resistant,
suggesting he would block
the son's plans.
During my call, the
mother invited me to sup
per, and, of course, I
accepted. This, I was told,
was the first time a
preacher had been in the
house, and though there
were no window screens
and flies swarmed, this
was a very special evening
for all of us.
As we sat to eat, the
mother asked her hus
band to pray. Surprised,
he mumbled under his
breath, "She's never asked
me before." Then, he
closed his eyes and said,
"God is great. God is good.
Let us thank Him for our
food. Amen." Childhood
prayers are never really
forgotten.
In deed, prayer is as
natural as breathing and
nearly as necessary for
living.
