I think that Forsyth should
tear down the crappy
WalMart that we have and
get a new 24 hour WalMart
which will promote more
jobs for some Monroe
County residents and would
hold more businesses in the
little lots next to it rank:0

old trees on the square,
they promised the new ones
would be 30 feet tall. Well,
they've planted the new

New bus route
for High Falls
Monroe County school
students in the High Falls
area should have shorter
bus rides after the school
system added a third bus
route in the area.
Transportation director
Dr. Jeffery Turner said at
last Tuesday’s school board
meeting that the two buses
serving High Falls were
picking up kids too early in
the morning and still
arriving at school very
late. So he added a third
route. Turner said the goal
is that no child should
spend more than 90 min
utes on the bus. He said
some kids were spending
two hours on the bus.
In other news:
• Monroe County’s board
of education went on
record last Tuesday as urg
ing Georgia lawmakers to
impose higher cigarette
taxes. Georgia currently
taxes cigarettes at 37 cents
a pack. Superintendent
Anthony Pack said a $1
increase in that tax would
bring in $335 million to
the state treasury. School
officials have complained
about cutbacks in state
funding.

Give food for Santa’s sleigh
Monroe County residents who want to help the increasing num
ber of needy people this Christmas season can drop canned and
boxed goods in the sleigh in the parking lot of Connie R. Ham
Realty on Lee Street. The goods are being collected by Mt. Zion
United Methodist Church. The food will be distributed through
Forsyth United Methodist Church's food ministry, which hands
out items the first Saturday of each month. Mt. Zion church
member and local real estate agency owner Connie Ham said
grocery store gift certificates, baby formula and diapers seem to
be some of the biggest needs. Above, kids from Mt. Zion get
ready to take the first load, about $300 worth, to the food bank.
Bring goods to the real estate office before Dec. 19. As the Bible
says "When you did it to one of the least of these my brothers
and sisters, you were doing it to me!"

emergency
workers
used Jaws
of Life to
pull the
driver out
of this tra-
cor trailer.

Monroe County emer
gency workers used the
Jaws of Life early
Thursday morning to res
cue an Oklahoma truck
driver whose semi caught
fire after he wrecked on I-
75. Rain-slickened roads
contributed to the acci
dent, which happened in
the northbound lane of I-
75 just south of Smarr
exit 181, said Monroe
County EMS spokeman
Shane Cook. The driver,
63-year-old Otho Ray
Reagan of Vian, Okla.,
had lost control of his
tractor trailer and
crashed into a tree
around 6:30 a.m. The
impact set the truck's fuel
tanks on fire and the
driver was trapped inside
the cab of the truck. Capt.
Lee Stilley, the first one
on the scene, said, when
he got out he could hear
the driver yelling for help.
"There was smoke filling
the cab and fire around
it," said Stilley.
Firefighters quickly con
tained and extinguished
the fire, allowing them to
immediately begin extri
cation of the driver. The
driver suffered multiple
severe injuries, but was
alert and conscious
throughout. The driver
was taken to the Medical
Center of Central Georgia
to be treated.
Animal Medical Clinic of Forsyth sets itself apart from other veterinarians in the area
with its friendly customer service, convenient hours - including Saturday hours and a
“just off the square ” location. Each pet is treated as if it was Dr. Smith’s family pet.
