DOC employees get aid to move
Department of
Corrections employees now
have more incentive to
move to the Monroe
County area with the DOC
headquarters in 2010.
DOC employees can now
borrow $7,500 interest-free
to help them buy an area
home. The Department of
Community Affairs
announced Monday it has
approved a special provi
sion allowing DOC employ
ees to use the state's PEN
HomeOwn Program (Public
Protectors, Educators and
Nurses) to help with their
relocation. The one-time
provision will allow DOC
employees who can't sell
their homes to borrow
$7,500 interest-free to use
as a downpayment on a
home. The home must be
in Monroe or surrounding
counties (Bibb, Crawford,
Upson, Lamar, Butts, Jones
or Jasper). The money
wouldn't have to be repaid
until the DOC employee
sold their home. Until this
exception was approved,
current homeowners did
not qualify.
DOC commissioner
James Donald said their
surveys show about 35
employees would qualify
for the money. The pro
gram will be offered July
2010 through January
2011 to existing eligible
employees. The DOC is
expected to open three
dorms at Tift College for
training cadets in late
2009. The plan is to move
its headquarters in 2010.
The PEN program is
designed to provide
increased down payment
assistance to Georgia’s
heroes. Eligible borrowers
may borrow $7500 at 0
percent interest to use
toward the down payment,
closing costs and other
loan related expenses
while contributing only 1
percent of the sales price to
the purchase.
“A major component of
the Department’s reloca
tion plan is providing
incentive to our staff,” said
Commissioner James E.
Donald. “The PEN
Program is one of the best
recruitment and retention
tools available, and any
incentive we can offer to
help retain staff is a bonus,
not only for us but also for
the staff member,” added
Donald.
Those employees may
purchase a home in
Monroe, Bibb, Crawford,
Upson, Lamar, Butts, Jones
or Jasper County.

School
board OKs
new districts
Monroe County parents
can now know which ele
mentary school their chil
dren will attend next year.
The Monroe County
school board unanimously
approved a district map
last Tuesday that divides
the county into three ele
mentary school districts.
The move was required as
the county expects to open
the new K.B. Sutton
Elementary School in
August 2009.
The west side of the
county is in the Hubbard
Elementary School district,
while the north and north
east section will go to K.B.
Sutton. The east and
southeast area, including
Bolingbroke and Smarr,
will attend T.G. Scott
Elementary.
Superintendent Anthony
Pack said only about 10
parents came by to look at
the map and most of the
feedback was very positive.
The districts were creat
ed based on population
density and the number of
students who receive free
or reduced lunch.
