Prison garden helps supply
food for Meals on Wheels
Wanda Granitz of First Baptist
Church’s Meals on Wheels program
visited Burruss Correctional Training
Center to talk with a group of inmates
about her program. These men have
been participating in a gardening
project since last spring. They have
been learning to operate a green
house. They have also built two raised
beds, and have grown enough vegeta
bles to sustain a small family. The
gardening project was designed to not
only grow plants, but to also improve
academic skills and to teach them to
stretch their food budgets as they pre
pare for reentry into society.
The class members presented
Granitz with a basket of sweet pota
toes and made plans to continue to
support Meals on Wheels in their
bounty.
