MP JV stays undefeated with home win

yard-line. However, the
Jaguars would quickly
get the ball back and
scored on a four-yard
touchdown run on the
final play of the third
quarter to pull within
eight at 20-12.
However, Spalding's
comeback hopes were
short-lived as Hartage
found Harvey coming on
a quick slant across the
middle, and the running
back darted through the
Spalding secondary for a
42-yard touchdown with
7:03 left in the game.
Hartage then connected
with Brian Hunter for a
two-point conversion to
give MP a 28-12 lead for
the final margin.
MP JV head coach
Matt Gordon said he
was very happy with the
way his team played
during the key stretches
of Thursday's game.
"We answered scores
when they scored and
held them on some key
fourth downs," Gordon
said. "Our kids play best
when the pressure is
highest. They seem to
feed off of that. That's
what it takes to be a
successful team."
It was MP's fourth con
secutive blowout win to
start the year. The
Bulldogs opened the sea
son with a 28-0 road vic
tory at Griffin on Sept.
3. MP then pounded
Jackson 34-2 at home on
Sept. 17 before beating
Lamar County 35-14 at
home on Oct. 1.
Gordon said he is very
pleased with the way his
team has performed so
far this year.
He said, "We, the
coaches,take great joy
in watching our young
players develop, compete
and succeed. Wins are
always important, but I
feel that the develop
ment of these players is
the big picture."
Gordon said he
believes his team has
the potential to win all
its games and repeat as
area JV champs, but it's
important that his team
not look ahead.

year by the New York
Giants' Odell Beckham.

later, running

for a three-

MP in front
6-0 with 6:45
left in the
first quarter.
After an
interception
by defensive
back Tre

excellent field position,
the Bulldogs capitalized
when running back
Bralen Harvey ran out
side down the left side
line for a 16-yard touch
down with 5:37 left in
the first quarter to put
MP in front 12-0.
Spalding threw a 28-
yard touchdown pass on
a slant route to pull the
Jaguars back to within
six at 12-6 early in the
second quarter, but the
Bulldogs answered just
before halftime. Hartage
hooked up with Alford,
who made a one-handed
circus grab with his

for the first time at 16-all when
Georgia Wilcox made
a right-handed shot.
MP finally took its
first advantage at
22-21. The Lady
Dogs would then
score the next three
points to take the
second set on an
unreturned shot by
MP's Zhareia Smith
and two long misses
by Upson-Lee,
respectively.
In the third set,
Upson-Lee led by as
many as six points at
20-14 before MP
nearly pulled out a
mini-miracle. The
Lady Dogs pulled
within one at 21-20
on a winner by
Campbell. However,
Upson-Lee answered
with three straight
points to go up 24-20
and get within one
point of reaching
state. But the Lady
Dogs weren't going
to make it easy on
Upson-Lee.
Campbell hit her
second straight win
ner to pull MP with
in three. Wilcox then
hit an unreturned
serve to get MP to
within 24-22. Two straight errant
shots by the Lady Knights then
unexpectedly tied the match at 24-
all. A successful block by Upson-
Lee's Kendall gave the Lady
Knights their fourth match point.
However, two straight MP points
by Ralls on a set and a blocked
spike, respectively, gave the Lady
Dogs their lone match point
chance up 26-25.
After an Upson-Lee timeout,
MP's Sanders served for the
upset. It was an opportunity that
we missed. In the end, losing that
game is the best motivation for my
girls to come back next year with a
goal. This is the first time we won't
be competing for state and they
will have to work hard
in the summer to make
sure that opportunity
is never missed again.
It will make our pro
gram stronger."
Ogide said her team
was talented enough to
have made a deep run
in the area tourney.
"I don't believe my
team played to its
potential," Ogide said.
"In my mind, it is capa
ble of winning our
area. They are great
players and have the
skills we needed but
just didn't have the
consistent fight that we
needed to continue."
Perennial power
Veterans went on to
defeat Perry in the
championship match to
take the area's top
seed. West Laurens
also qualified for state
as the area's No. 3
seed.
After dropping its
opening match in
straight sets to Perry
on Saturday, MP ral
lied with a straight sets
victory over Americus-
Sumter (25-19, 25-13)
before facing Upson-
Lee early Saturday
afternoon.
Ogide said she was pleased with
MP's hosting of the region tourney.
"I feel like the event as a whole
went great," Ogide said. "Many
teams complimented the hard
work of the program. Hosting an
area tournament took several vol
unteers and they did a fantastic
job. It was a huge honor to host it
and a big step in the right direc
tion for our volleyball program."
The Lady Dogs completed the
season with a 10-31 overall record.

fifth chance to close out the match.
This time, Upson-Lee finally
secured the win when Kacie
Fennell tipped a winner across the
net.
MP head coach Lisa Ogide said
she hopes her team uses the nar
row defeat as motivation in the off
season.
"Last year we were in the same
position with Upson-Lee and we
beat them by two points to qualify
us for state," Ogide said. "This
year, they beat us. We were all
