Bernice Smith, who
retired from T.G. Scott.
Elementary, had the idea
that. Union Hill Baptist.
Church could provide
a Summer Reading
Program for children
of the church, children
who live in the apart
ments and houses near
the church and others
whose family members
could bring them to the
program.
She shared her idea
with Jessica Whatley,
who is a counselor at.
Monroe County Middle
School, and others
in her church, and a
group of volunteers and
sponsors turned the
idea into a reality that,
served more than 30
children from pre-kin
dergarten through 6t.h
grade Monday through
Wednesday each week
from June 6 through
July 27. There were also
five or six 8t.h grade and
high school students
who worked as volunteer
leaders every day.
The organizers packed
the program with read
ing, field trips and fun
activities. Participants
was something they
hadn’t, seen before,” said
Whatley. “They were
able to touch some of the
animals, and we did all
kinds of activities.”
The children also
enjoyed a field trip to
Forsyth Dairy Queen,
and on the last, day of
the program Persons
Banking Company pro
vided an inflatable water
slide that, was a perfect,
treat, for a hot. summer
day.
Whatley said one of the
first, things volunteers
did was collect, book
donations. She divided
the books into lexile
levels and started the
children at. their read
ing levels, moving them
up as they progressed.
Adults read to those who
were not. able to read to
themselves. In associa
tion with reading, they
played games related to
the subject, matter in the
books.
“I never read so many
NBA books in my life!”
said Whatley.
Thanks to a spon
sor, each child who
participated received a
backpack full of school
supplies for 2016-17 on
the last, day of the pro-
