jjew York. Nov. 21.—Aggregate
sales of stocks at the Stock Exchange
jell off to-day but notwithstanding
the decline in activity marking a shrink
age in the active demand for stocks,
prices were well maintained. The
market is best defined as quiet and
etrorui.
The causes of the falling oft in busi
ness were not very clear. The fact of
a broken week ahead on account of
the Thanksgiving holiday, may have
been a motive. There were some in
timations that the expectation of an
immediate decision of the Northern
Securities suit might be disappointed.
Wall street clings to conviction that
the decision of that suit is to be the
cjgpal for some important announce
ment affecting the trans-continntal
railroad situation and the prospects of
is delay discouraged some operations.
Vnion Pacific was noticeably strong,
however, as were St. Paul and the
bonds in any way related to the
.Northern Securities adjustment.
Money Growing Scarcer.
A consideration of the diminishing
supplies in the money market may have
admonished some of the speculative

ments but such a consideration falls
to explain tho strength of the duller
traders.
The industrial department of the
market continued relatively con
spicuous and there was an occasional
movement in that department on the
part of stocks a long time dormant,
previous quotations running back over
a year in some of these. The more
active industrials were strong. The
United States Steel stocks and the
railroad equipment stocks reflected the
good reports from trade circles.
The day's small changes in leading
stocks comports with the narrowing of
the dimensions of the market and the
closing was Irregular and below the
beet..

MERCHANT MARINER.
Positions He Could Fill Given to
Naval OnUters and Politicians.

I know that ouf officers are Just as
gallant, just as brave, Just as skilled
as the officers of any other navy. I
believe that our officers are the best
educated men, as a class, in the world.
I know that our enlisted men are now
nearly all American citizens. I know
that a large proportion of them are
American born. 1 know that they are
the best clothed, the best sheltered, the
best fed and the best paid men of any
navy In the world, and 1 believe if war
ever conies, which God forbid, when
fight we must, our chances are our men
will fight as well, if not better, than
the men of any other navy.
This is what the" Secretary of’ the
Navy said in a speech recently, every
word of which is true, ami no native
born American could, or would, desire
to say less of the navy personnel. But
is R not about time that some public
man, or man of affairs, did something
or said something in favor of the offi
cers and crews of the merchant ma
rine—that industry from which some
of the best officers & j;d men ever known
to the naval service were drawn during
our Civil-War.
Avery able and worthy merchant
mariner, who lost his position recently
through no fault of his own, said to us:
"I am weary and footsore in an un
successful attempt to find a position
that I feel I am oompetent to flli, and
I cannot even get the position of, a
night watchman oh shipboard or on a
dock, a job which a needy but unfor
tunate mariner oould always obtain in
years gone by."
This is a lamentable condition, and is
certainly a reflection on those who have
Influenced the filling of the offices of
port wardens, dock masters and other
state and municipal places that ex
mariners oould so ably flli, with politi
cal dependents. Then, there are the po
sitions of the supervisor of the harbor,
the oommanders of the schoolehips,
governor of the Sailors' Snug Harbor,
each receiving a salary from the gov
ernment. all filled by narnl officers;
besides, we are Informed that a naval
officer recently has been given a leave
of absence for a year to become the
manager of a steamahlp line out of this
port.
The Marine Journal knows of many
ex-shipmasters who could fill any one
of these positions as creditably as
those who are filling them now, and
who actually need the wages that go
with these positions to support those
dependent upon them, in a manner
such as they are entitled to through
the valuable public service rendered by
their ancestors as master mariners.
The Chamber of Commerce of this port
Is the largest and most Influential com
mercial body of men In the United
States. Its original membership con
sisted of men interested in shipping,
and at one time it carried on Its rolls
many of the ablest shipmasters and ex
ehipmosters the country ever.knew.
The Chamber of Commerce at one
time thrived wholly through the sup
port of shipping men. There are a few,
a very few, left, and these cannot yet
have forgotten the value the merchant
mariner has been to the organization
as well as to this great port in helping
to make it great, and would be of the
same service again if the opportunity
offered. Is it then asking too much
that this honorable body. In its own
way, make the effort, to have the places
we have named filled- by ex-shipmas
ters through the proper authorities,
thereby assuring a deserving class of
fellow citizens that they are not wholly
forgotten by at least one commercial
organization which their forefathers
established?

such harsh and uncertain means. He cures blind,

ulcers and cancers of the rectum. He performs no
operations, uses no knife. Still, It should not be sup
posed that a simple suppository, such as Is sold In drug
stores and by mall order venders, will cure so serious a

WITNESS IS WANTED
TO PROVE MURDER.
After Thirteen Years Johnson Has
Been Captured.
Dalton, Ga., Nov. 21.—Price Broyles
of Dalton was killed thirteen years ago
in Chattanooga by a man named John
son of Atlanta. Johnson escaped, but
was captured Saturday at Oxark, Ark.
Two or three eye-witnesses are dead
and the living witness. John Buffing
ton of Dalton, is wanted by the broth
ers of the dead man.
Treaty With Switnrlsnd.
Washington, Nov. 21.—Secretary Hay
and Mr. Probat, the Swiss charge d'af
faires, to-day signed an arbitration
treaty on behalf of the United States
and Switzerland. The treaty follows
the lines of the American and French
arbitration treaty.
