New York. Nov. 29. —Speculative In
terest was well maintained in to-day’s
stock market and another large day's
business was transacted. There were
points of aggressive strength in the
market and these included some of
the influential railroad stocks. But
the greater part of the advances of
the day were amongst stocks of less
credit, and sharp reactions were suffer
ed by recent Influential leaders of the
advance.
This was notably true of the great
Southern Trunk Line stocks and Col
orado Fuel, which made such brilliant
advances yesterday and also of Unit
ed States Steel preferred.
The pulling out of short lines on
the general reaction seemed to afford
a basis for the later rally which also
became fairly general. The rise in
some of the obscurer stocks was sen
sational and the lack of. explanation
for them in any news developments
aroused suspicion of a manipulative
origin.

Taken in connection with the unusual
number of failures recently among out
side stock dealers and bucket shops,
presumably due to commitments on

the short side of a ris'ng market, the
presumption is suggested that cam
paigns against known positions of
bucket shops on certain stocks are
the ground for the manipulated ad
vances in those stocks.
Much the most influential movement
in sustaining the rest of the market
by sympathy was that in the trunk
line stocks. New York Central rising
well above 140 on an unusually large
absorption. The demand for Pennsyl
vania was also on an important scale.
The regular dividends only on Sugar
refuted the predictions that a division
of the surplus was contemplated, but
did not prevent the stock from being
one of the features of the rise. The
irregular movement of the market con
tinued to the closing.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales
par value $8,035,000. United States
bonds were unchanged on call.

New York. Nov. 29—There were no
startling developments over night of a
character to Influence speculation or
Introduce any new element and so the
call money market continued com
paratively easy. The stocks specu
lation in many respects resemble that
of last week and so extensive profit
taking was in evidence and imparted
some aspect of irregularity to the
movement. Nevertheless, the under
tone ruled strong, prices rally with
more ease than they decline, and there
are new features of bull aggessive
ness. the continued absorption of steel
stooks continues to encourage the Im
pression that some important develop
ment is Impending for the benefit of
the property in particular, irrespective
of trade betterment. The advance in
New York Central was not explained.

There was also excellent buying of
Pennsylvania, and Clover Leaf rose
sharply on revived rumors of buying
for control. Many of the railroad is
sues, however, were fractionally lower
under profit-taking. The market
closed active and strong, with total
sales of the day of 1.520.000.

Three new ships to take cargoes from
this port to European ports were post
ed at the Cotton Exchange yesterday.
They are the British ship Fenchurch,
1,834 tons; and the Austrian ships Lu
cia, 1,437 tons, and Marianne, 2,237
tons. They will arrive sometime dur
ing the present month. Another large
steamship recently chartered for this
port is the Miguel de Larrinaga (Br),

For n Great Negro School.
Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 29.—Ground
was broken to-day for the first build
ing of a great negro educational In
stitution which the Freedmen’s Aid and
Southern Education Society, an aux
iliary of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, will erect at Spalding, five
miles from here. The first building will
cost $30,000 and others will be erected
making the total Investment several
hundred thousand dollars. Among
those taking part In the ceremonies
were Bishop J. M. Walden of Cincin
nati; Bishop O. A. Goodsell of Bos
ton: President F. M. Jackson of the
Birmingham Commercial Club and
Mayor Drennan of Birmingham.
