stocks made volatile advances to-day,
but they were of a character less im
pressive to stock market sentiment
than some of those that have shot up
from the recent past. There were also
fewer of them. The instability of oth
fr recent favorites at the altitude to
which thev had been forced also begot
some suspicion of these movements,
which culminated in the violent break
in prices at the last.
The general level of the market has
not been responsive to advancing ten
dencies for several days past, and the
steady profit-taking at different points
throughout the list has caused the fear
that reaction was at hand.
There was some remaining disquiet
this morning over newly resumed gold
exports, but the distinctly easier tone
for money, both call and time hjans,
made any solicitude on this subject
seem misplaced. No borrowers seem
disposed to take loans at present rates,
except for short periods and the aver
age rate for call loans to-day fell to
St* per cent. Sterling exchange, in
deed, was firmer here and lower In
Berlin, while the price of gold ad
vanced in London.
President's Messtge Helped.
The hour after the President’s mes
sage appeared was the strongest period
„f the day’s market, and resulted in a
fairly comprehensive advance to above
last night's level in the standard stocks
which had hung back up to that time.
It was after an interval of hesitation

that the market broke to the extreme
level, which was modified only by the
scramble of room shorts to take quick
profits, causing some sudden rallies.
This scramble of shorts gave color
do the supposition that the break was
due to a concerted raid especially on
Amalgamated Copper. Others attach
ed importance to the discussion which
arose of the President's recommenda
tion of authority to the Interstate
Commerce Commission to fix railroad
rates, although some such suggestion
has come from the railroads them
selves as the only means to do awsy
with the anti-trust law provision
against agreements on rates.
By others it was inferred that the
studied ignoring of the subject of the
tariff in the message was to be accept
ed as an intimation of a special mes
sage on the subject, and a probable
advocacy of revision. The news of
the day was favorable to property val
ues. The Lackawanna ’’melon’’ of $5
per share of 10 per cent, proved about
half the advance in the price of the
stock fof some single days recently.
Bonds were steady. Total sales, par
value, $4,560,000. United States bonds
were steady.

Why people of good position, partic
ularly if they have no scruples worth
mentioning, should complain of hard
times In England, got-* beyond me.
There is always the wonderful credit
system to fall back upon. I could
live a couple of years without a penny
