New York, Dec. 17.—The stock mar
ket gave evidence of further strength
and growth of confidence to-day, but
when Amalgamated Copper began to
run down hill in the final transactions
the whole market promptly respond
ed, thus demonstrating the influence
still held in the market by that stock
and by the operations that have re
cently centered In it. The closing was,
in consequence, weak.
The most conspicuous strength of the
day was shown by the United States
cJteel stocks regarding which there
were many reports current of an in
tended resumption of speculative oper
ations for a rise as well as of large
orders for steel rails and other pro
ducts.-
Leather Was Weak.
The announcement of the reorgani
zation plan of the United States Leath
er Company was the signal for some
heavy selling of those stocks which
seemed to indicate dissatisfaction with
the plan on the part of the stock
holders. The weakness of these shares
had some sentimental effect on the
general list and the advancing ten
dency with which the market opened,
was not resumed until effective sup
port was offered to the Leather stocks.
The final selling movement left many
stocks below last night. The extreme
ease of the present money market led
to neglect of the figures of the bank
statement. It was after the appear
ance of the bank statement that prices
began to drop. Sterling exchange
was strong and rose 25 points.

WARE & LELAYR'S
Weekly Stock Letter.
New York, Dec. 17. —The stock mar
ket this week held remarkably well
against the bears raids and closes very
near the top, many stocks having re
gained all of their losses from the week
before. The bank statement was taken
as very favorable. The heavy reduc
tion in loans shows that liquidation has
run its course. The advance to-day
in Steel preferred was caused by heavy
buying by Davis & Cos. for accounts of
London houses. This shows that the
foreigners are regaining confidence, and
this should help the stock market next
week. On the whole we see no reason
to change our opinion on the bull side
of stocks. After an advance of oser
five months such breaks in the mar
ket are but natural. But the same
condition of affairs exists now as be
fore the break. A bear raid headed by
such a man as Lawson, tbaugh it was
successful, does not alter thb fact that
the railroads and trust companies are
making big money and paying good
dividends right along. The market
should be steady next week and will
show advances. Louisville and Nash
ville has increased its dividend and
should sell much higher. Southern
Railway looks well, and among the
Grangers we advise purchases of Rock
Island and Southern Pacific. Steel
preferred will go to par. The pool
have it booked for that figure, and
say the common will sell at 40. V. C.
has stood the break well and will work
higher. Chicago and Alton is the
cheapest stock on the list. Look out
for American Car and Foundry (A. C.
F.) We have inside information that
that company is doing a great busi
ness. An advance in this stock should
follow. We cannot yet see anything
to turn this market into a bear one.
