NEYV-ORLEANS, OCT. 7. .
wp Late from Nassau, A". P. —By the arrival, ves
“terdny, of tile schooner Savannah, which sailed on
the 25th September from Nassau via Key West, we
have received a file of the Nassau Observer to the
23d ult. The papers contain but little of general
session of the Legislature bad been call,
ed by the Governor; and after a short sitting ad
journed, having concluded the business for which
they had convened.
YVc have been politely furnished with the follow
ing report of the Bchooncr Savannah, w hich says,
“Nothing had yet been done with the Spanish
barque Kosini, carried into Nassau by the wreckers.
Her cargo is said to be invoiced at $190,000. The
American schooner Comet, Kennedy master, from
New York, bound to Mobile, 11 days out, was
wracked on the Jolter Keys on Man day last, 15th
inst. The cargo has been saved, but the schooner
i6 too much damaged to be got off; she had 1 passen
.gors. Her cargo, was sold on the 24t1( ist.
A British brig from Santiago de Cuba, (the Mar
garet Ilighfield, Captain Johnson,) copper ore, was
abandoned and foundered off Nassau on the nightof
the 19th Sept, the captain, mate, and a boy having
died of yellow fever subsequent to leaving Cuba
Left American schr. Columbia, to sail in a few days
for New York, with the Ex-American Consul,
Huyler, and his family. Prospects in Nassau assume
a gloomy appearance; the Bank is broken, and there
is very little money in circulation. Sailed for
Havana, the brig Mary Ann, Hudson, with a cargo
■of flour and lard. Flour was selling in Nassau at
$G 75 per barrel, in bond.
Arrived at Key W est, on the afternoon of the
27th; found some little excitement prevailing
amongst the inhabitants. Some w r cre expecting a
visit from the Scminolcs. YVas informed that a
body of Indians, about twenty in number, had been
seen near the quarters, where some few troops arc
stationed, at two different periods, and that at one
time the sentry fired on them. Diligent search was
made in the woods, but without effecting any thing.
The Key at pro'sent, is in a poor state of defence.
Moßir.E, Oct. 8.
The, Cotton Crop. —From the recent state of the
weather here, and all the accounts we have from
the interior, there can hardly be n doubt that there
will be a very considerable tailing off in our staple.
The quantity of rain which has fallen here within
a few days is unprecedented; and if,as we fear, the
storm has extended into the interior, it must mater
ially lessen the quantity of cotton calculated upon
after the ravages of the worm. YVe are not gener
ally disposed to put much faith in the usual com
plaints of short crops—they have become for the
past few years to be considered as matters of course.
But in regard to the present crop, we are satisfied,
and so must any one he, who is at all acquainted
with cotton culture, that such excessive rains ns
have fallen here would be very destructive to cotton
while maturing, and even after maturity. Last sea
son will serve as an illustration by contrast. It will
be recollected that early complaints were made of a
short crop, owing to the drought, which continued
from the middle of summer until the entire crop
was gathered; and the result is that upwards of
456,000 bales have been received here up to the Ist
inst.
Louis Philippe. —lt would not seem that Louis
Philippe has not much fear of inspection or as
sassination, for ho appears in public ns often as any
monarch. When lie came to Paris last Sunday, he
was recognized as he rode through the streets, and
cheered, and when ho went back to Eu he was
again cheered and returned the salutations of the
people. At Dieppe, tills week, he appeared on
horseback, and at Eu. He is, 1 understand, very
accessible. The King is never cheered with en
thusiasm evincing airy personal regard, nor does
there appear to he any of tluit feeling of attachment
to him as a sovereign by the grace of God, such as
there has been in old times, but he is cheered as
onr people would cheer a President, as the head of
and ns such entitled to outward
.demonstrations of respect. Among the people,
there does not seem to lie any enmity to the King,
nor cun we discover in the mass, when he is pre
sent, any particular coolness, and although there
are parlies in Franco that would overthrow the
present government if they could, they arc too
small to effect any thing, have no reason in their
hate, and offer no substitute for what they would
destroy. The people of France have had enough
of revolution, and the active bone and muscle of
the country is too young to have any enthusiastic
desire to embark in a crusade to revive a dynasty
•of which it knows nothing except from report.—

The Bible—the whole Bible—and nothina hut the
Bible. —Ono of the most singular and extraordinary
instances of fanaticism that has fallen to our lot to
record occurred on Monday in Ship-street. A
man named Moiloy, whose family and connections
are said to be respectable, has devoted for some
years the greater part of his time in reading, the
I scriptures, ami interpreting their meaning as his
own fancy dictated, until ho worked himself up to
1 a pitch of religious fanaticism which ended in the
Im ost deplorable manner. He was particularly
struck with the 29th and 30th verses of the stli
chapter of St. Matthew, and whether in the house
or in the street, at his employment or otherwise,
repeated them over and over again, “And if thy right
ejjjf offend thee pluck it out, and cast it front thee,
jot it is profitable for thee that one of thymombers
liould perish, and not that thy whole body should
.• cast into hell.—“And if thy right hand offend
t>.lino cqt it off, and cast it from thee, for it is prolit-
IHble that one of thy members should perish, and
Ji .ilat that thy whole body should be cast into hell.”
| In Monday evening tic shut himself up in his
f ftnni, and actually fulfilled the counsel given in
L'llese passages to the very letter, by plucking out
||s right eye with a knife, “and casting it from
K’llui,” and afterwards cutting off his right hand f!
Onortly after the commission of the act he was
iftiml extended on the floor (where he had fallen
4s" l toss of blood,) in the most dreadful agony,
to the many inquiries made as to what could
