881 Bfllfe ft _ The following anecdote is told in illustration of the Scotch veneration for the Sabbath:—-A ceolo nst, while in the country, and having hi& pocket hammer with him took it out and was chip ping the rock by the wayside for examination.—- His proceedings did not escape the quick eye and ready tongue of an old Scotchwoman. “ W hat are you doing there man ?” “ Don’t you see, I’m breaking a stone.” “ Y’are doing mair than that; y’are breaking the Sabbath.” The Cholera has been very busy in carrying ofF theatrical people in England. Lay cock, scene painter at Astly’s, and Miss Ross Henry, of the same establishment, have lately died ot the chol era; also Mr. Hea.lv, ot the Lyceum ; John Nash for manv years treasurer at the Surrey ; Henry Lee, brother of Alexander Lee, the composer: Mr. Cooke, father of Miss Cooke, the actress; Professor Hemming, rival of Risly in gymnastic feats, besides several stage carpenters and several supernumeraries. A singular affair occurred in the offi e of reg ister of deeds in Poston on Wednesday last, namely, the explosion of an inkstand. It made a noise like the report of a pistol, and on examin ing the stand a vertical fissure was found extend ing from top to bottom ; some records were so damaged as to be necessary to be re-written. At tlie'St. Louis Convention an estimate was submitted by Col. Curtis, a skillful en o 1 ) the cost of a railroad to the Pacific and the cost of a survey. It can be made, he thinks, for eighty-nine millions of dollars ; and one thousand men, an engineer, with a party being assigned to each one hundred miles, can complete the survey in one year. Some of the merchants of Philadelphia have at list moved in the mat er of a direct steamship communication between that city and Europe. An official statement, made to the Kentucky State Constitutional Convention, shows that there are in hat State 70,707 parents, and 192.990 chil dren. On Tuesday evening, a week ago, a rencontre took place between Col. Bowes and Dr. Sherrod, the member elect to the lower House of the In diana State Legislature. Tn the course of the conflict pistols were used freely, and the latter was fin illy shot down. The wound was consid ered mortal, and the Doctor was not expected to live. A letter writer in California pays S3O a month for the luxury of a bed in a dirty corner on tip loft of a store, at Sun Francisco, and gets Ins meals at the very low price of one dohhu* pet meal! Comfortable, very. At the last accounts Mr. Van. Aten, U. S. Min ister to E ,7,ja ff or had not reached Quito, the sent p;. mission. He was taken very ill at Guvta, a town on the coast of Peru, six hundred miles south of Guyaqnill. A Jonah's Thought.— The boat of a whaler was once knocked several feet in the air by a blow from the tale of a fDh to which it was fast. Upon coming down the steersman fell into the whale’s mouth, and the teeth of the animal closed upon his leg. After being in this terrible position for some time, he was released, picked up by another boat and carried on board, where, while prepara tions were making to amputate his crushed leg, be was a-ked what he “thought of while in the whale’s mouth?” with ihe utmost simplicity he replied, “ Why I thought she would yield about 60 barrels ? ” General Cass will deliver a lecture before the Mechanics’ Association of Rochester, in a few weeks. • The Commissioners for fixing the boundary be tween the States of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, entered upon their duties on Monday last Several old land marks have been discov ered, sufficient to show that several valuable fa m-, heretofore supposed to belong to Delaware, are in fact in the territory of Pennsylvania. So says the Philadelphia Sews, A Honolulu paper tells a strange story of a man and woman, who some five years since ab sconded into the distant mountain jungle, where, under a dense mass of overshadowing convolvol us, they constructed a hut, in which they lived without being seen bv any human being, the suc ceeding five yews. Tired at last with their stol en enjoyments, they have just abandoned their seclusion, and returned to the abodes of men, where they were instantly seized and condemned to the usual fine. They had, for fear of detection, cooked all iheir food, and most of what was ne cessary for the support of life, in the night, and lurked in the day time in their gloomy cell. The ladies of Pittsburg, if we may believe one ot their own papers, cannot keep their faces clean, in consequence of the coal soot which is constant ly falling in the American Birmingham. When a lady’s face receives a descending flake, her near est friend blows it off. To wipe it off would only make bad worse, and singular to say, the greatest kindness shown by ladies to each other°w when they come to blows. SNIDER, LATHROP & NEVITT. Savannah , Georgia.
