Scri vex Cos., Nov. 28, 1849. jl/r. E • J- Purse, Sir In compliance with instructions, I herewith forward VOU a copy of Resolutions passed at the last regular meeting of Roxbury Division, No. 243 S. of T. for publication in the friend of the Family. Yours very respectfully, JAS. MIDDLETON, R. S. On motion of Brother Stotesbury, it was unanimously Resolved, J bat the thanks of the Division are hereby ten ured to Mrs. Murchison, Mrs. Frazer, and Miss Ann Mor ten for their kindness in completing the Regalia of this Divi sion. Resolved, That the R. S. furnish Mr. E. J. Purse a copy of this Resolution for publication in A Friend of the Family. Extract from the minutes. JAS. MIDDLETON, RS. HAPPINESS. There is not anything in this world, perhaps, that is more talked of, and less understood, than the business of a happy life.’ It is every man’s wish and design, and yet not one of a thousand knows wherein that happiness consists. We live, however, in a blind and eager pursuit of it, and the more haste we make in a wrong way, the far ther we are from our journey’s end. ... It fares with us in human life as with a routed army ; one stumbles first, and then another falls upon him, and so they follow, one upon the neck of another, till the whole field seems to be one heap oi miscarriages. And the mischief is, that the number of the multitude carry it against truth and justice, so that we must leave the crowd if we would be happy ; for the question of a happy life is not to be decided by vote ; nay, so far from it,that plurality of voices is still an argument of the wrong; the common people find it easier to bTievethan to judge, and content themselves with what is usual, never examining whether it he good or no. By the common people is intended the /nan of title, as well as the clouted shoe; for I do notiliainguiAi them bv the eye, but by the mind, which is the proper judge of the man The true felicity of life is to he free from pertur bations ; to understand our duties toward God and man ; to enjoy the present without any anx ious dependence upon the future —not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears, but u* ic&i satisfied with what we have, which is abundantly sufficient; for lie that is so, wants nothing. The great blessings of mankind arc within us, and within our reach ; but we shut our eyes, and, like people in the dark, we fall foul of the very thing we search sot, without finding it It mast be a sound mind that makes a happy man ; there must be a constancy and serenity in all con ditions; a care for the things of this world, but without trouble ; and such art indifferency for the bounties of fortune, that, cither with them or with out them, we may live contentedly. There must he neither lamentation, nor quarrelling, nor sloth, nor fear; for it makes a discord in a man’s life. He that fears, serves. The joy of a wise man stands firm without interruption : in all places, at all times, and in all conditions, his thoughts are cheerful and quiet As the body is rather a necessary thing than a great, so the com | forts of it are but temporary and vain ; besides, Without extraordinary moderation, their end is poly pain and repentance. Whereas a peaceful conscience, honest thoughts, virtuous actions, and an indifference for casual events, are blessings Wl thout end, satiety or measure. — Scncca.
