The steamship Crescent City arrived on Friday’ bringing a million and a quarter dollars worth of California gold. She left Chagres on the 28th of November. In the wa\ of business, speculation, and the yield from the “diggins,” the intelligence by this arrival bears much the same complexion as we have been in the habit of getting. Politics run high, and the people have learned to divide themselves into \\ higs and Democrats. Colonel Fremont and Thomas Butler King are likely to lie the U. S. Senators, if California is ad mitted by Congress as a State. There are many rivals lor the Governorship, and for the lower House ol Congress, &c. The Constitution agreed upon by the conven tion at Montery, (which re-voted upon the clause prohibiting the entrance of free negroes, and left itoutof the Constitution,) was to be passed upon by the people in a short time. No doubt existed of its almost unanimous rati fication. The Constitution of California is one ot the Riost radical of any political community in the Paper-money institutions are prohibited, home fled exemption is provided for, nearly every oili er,judicial and otherwise, is elective directly by ibe people ; women are not to be deprived of their property by marriage : slavery is barred out forever ; the hands of the Legislature are tied, from contracting debts to burthen posterity with, an( l no duellist can either vote or hold oflice. 1 here is many an older State than California, which will he achieving some of these same re forms one of these day T s. We also learn that several young ladies are about leaving Boston for California. Female Society.—He who speaks lightly of female society is a numskull or a knave ! the"for mer not having sense enough to discern its bene fits, and the latter hating the restraint it lays on his vices. A weak mind sinks under prosperity as well as under adversity. A strong, deep mind has two highest tides—when the moon is at the full and when there is no moon. Liquid Style.—A paper in speaking of a temperance address, says it abounded with oceans of sentiment, rivers of love, torrents of feeling, and a perfect deluge of sense.
