EXAMINATION CPA THIEF TWO
HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
March 11, 10-31.—1 went to the
Chateler, or Prison. There a male
factor was to have the question of
torture given to him—he refusing
to confess the robbery with which
he was charged—which was thus:
they first bound his wrists with a
strong rope, or small cable, and one
end to an iron ring made fast to the
wall, about four feet from the floor,
and then his feet with another
cable fastened about five feet fur
ther than his utmost length, to
another ring on the floor of the
room. Thus suspended, and }*et
lving but aslant, they slid a horse
of wood under the rope which
bound his feet, which so exceeding
ly stiffened it as severed the fellows
joints in miserable sort, drawing
him out at length in an extraordina
ry manner, he having onl\ T a pair of
linen drawers on his naked bod\ r .
Then they questioned him of a rob
borv, (die Lieutenant being present
and a clerk that wrote,) which not
confessing, the\ r put a higher horse
under the rope, to increase the tor
ture and extension. In this agon}*,
confessing nothing, the executioner,
with a horn, such as they drench
horses with, stuck the end of it in
to his mouth and poured the quan
tity of two buckets of water down
his throat and over him, which so
prodigiously swelled him as would
have pitied and affrighted any one
to see it; fur all this, he denied all
that was charged to him. They
then let him down, and then carried
him before a warm fire to bring him
to himself, being now, to all appear
ance dead with pain. What be
came of him I know not; but the
gentleman whom he robbed, con
stantly averred him to be the man,
and the fellow’s suspicious, pale
looks, befi robe knew lie should be
racked,be:rayed some guilt; the lieu
tenant was also of that opinion, and
us at iirst dgl t (for he was a lean, told
dry, black young man,) he would j
conquer the torture ; and so it seems
they could not hang him, but did
use in such cases, where the evi
dence s very presumptive, to send
ihem to the galleys, which is as bad
as deain — John Lively ns Dtary.
In the Cfulv r settlement of this
country, a carriage maker took a
young lad, who wish to learn the
trade, about fifteen miles to a law
yer, to get his indentures of ap
prenticeship drawn. He started
early, and reached the place at what
is now about earl}* breakfast time.
The attorney immediately set to
work to draw the articles, which he
promised to have done at noon.—
The master and boy adjourned to
the tavern, kept by a celebrated
publican, old Colonel II , whose
buxom wife was the neatest and
cleverest of landladies, and spent
the lime quite pleasanity; drinking
life Colonel’s flip and eating his hot
cakes, until (he time appointed.—
lie then called, and found but little
progress had been made in his bu
siness. The lawyer was very bu
s\ T ANARUS, but something of a bungler,
(quite unlike any of the profession
now-a-days,) and be went away
again and took another mug of flip.
So he kept calling and being put
off, until near night, when he grew
impatient, and said to the boy—
“ Come Horace, we may as well
start for home for your time ivill be
(ait l) fore he gets the indentures drawn
out “ —A a ic/cerbocke r.
Mrs. Partington's Last. —“ Fifty
Iwo Sons of Bemperace,” exclaimed
Mrs. Partington, and “ twenty-five
daughters,” too. Why, bless me !
how many children has Aunt Tem
p\ r got ? And L hear some talk
noout Cadets of Temperance !
What sorts of debts are them ? But
no wonder she owes debts, when she
has so many children to maintain
how I pitty the old*critter.” And
Jhe old lady pulled her spectacles
° ver he r nose and resumed herknit
ting.
C
IMAGINATION.
Two gentlemen stopped at an inn
at Hitchin, in Hertfordshire, one
evening at a late hour, and an
nounced there intention of sleeping
there. They were told that every
bed was occupied ; but, having rep
resented that they bad been to a fair
in a neighboring town, and bad trav
elledalmost the whole ol the pre
ceding night, the landlord said, that
if they could put up with a small
room at the top of the house, and
one bed for the two, he believed his
wife could accommodate them. —
They accepted this offer without
hesitation, and, after taking supper
and a glass of grog, they retired,
arid without any critical examina
tion of their dormitory, went to bed,
and soon fell asleep.
In an hour or two one of the gen
tlemen was awoke by tiie groans
ofhis companion, who was asthma
tic, and who complained bitterly of
a sense of suffocation, and begged
of him to get out of bed, and open
the window to admit some fresh air.
He immediately rose, and began to
feel around the room, but after
sometime, told his friend that he
could not find a window.
“ Pray, trv again,” said the afllic
ted man in great agon} r : “ I cannot
breathe, and I am sure I shall not
live tili morning, if fresh air is not
admitted ! ”
Another search was made, and
at last it was announced that the
window was found, but it could not
| be opened.
“ Never mind,” said the invalid,
“ break one of the squares, and I’ll
pav for it in the morning.”
1 o
Smash went the glass, but it was
small.
“ Break a couple more,” said be,
“ anything rather than this insuffer
able suffocation.”
Smash went his friend’s shoe
against two more squares.
u W ell, how do you feel now ? ”
“ Oh, a great deal better ; I can
breathe freely now ; you may get
into bed, and I thank you a thous
and times for your kindness.”
They soon fell asleep again, and
were awoke the next morning by a
rap at the door, and the voice of the
waiter, desiring to know if they
wanted warm water.
“ Water 1 why its pitch dark !
what makes 3*oll call us so soon ? ”
“Oh, sir,” was the reply, “it’s
past 1L o’clock, and it’s dark be
cause you have no window in the room
—I have got a candle for you to
dress by.”
It was indeed a fact, that there
was no window, and what was ta
ken for one b\ r the party that
searched, was an old bookcase, put
there to be out of the way ; and the
“ fresh air,” which so much relieved
the asthmatic invalid, was just what j
was contained in its antiquated j
shelves ; affording a singular in
stance of the power of imagina
tion over the “ ills that flesh is heir j
to.”
Fray or Die. —On Tuesday night
a person was committed to jail at
Northampton, and pLaced in a room
with a maniac, who had been con
fined there temporarily, previous to
his being taken to the insane hospi
tal, at Brattleboro’. After the new
comer had “turned in” for the
night, his crazy chum ordered him
up, told him to dress himself, and
then make a prayer, or he would
choke him to death. There was no
way but to obey, and after making
what he supposed to be a sufficiently
long prayer, he stopped. Tlis in
quisitor told him to keep on, and he
actually kept him praying all night!
The poor man was not relieved un
til the jailor carried in his breakfast.
1 /etty JI omen. —Ot all other views
a man may, in lime, grow tired ;
but in the countenance of woman
there is a variety which sets wear
iness at defiance. “The divine
right of beauty,” says Junius, “is
the only dwme right a man can ac
knowledge, and a pretty woman the
only tyrant he is not authorized to
resist.”
