A Scottish Sergeant’s Address
To the Indians, who were about to inflict tor
ture on him.
“ Heroes and Patriarchs of the Western
World ! you were not the enemies whom I
was seeking; but you have, at least, con
ered. The fate of war has placed me
, n your hands. Use the right of victory as
it suits your inclination; I dispute it not. —
3 it, since it is a custom of my country to of
fer a ransom for life, listem to a proposition
w hich is not to be despised :
]{no\v then, brave Americans, that in the
country where I was born, certain men have
supernatural knowledge. One of these sa
„ , s , who is allied to mo by blood, gave me,
when I became a soldier, a charm, which
would render me invulnerable. You have
seen how 1 have escaped all your arrows:
without this enchantment would I be able to
survive all the mortal blows with which you
have assailed mo ? for I call your valor to
witness, mine lias neither sought repose nor
flod the danger. It is less the life that I de
mand of you to-day, th in the glory of reveal
ing to you a secret, important for your pres
ervation, and which would render invincible
the most valiant nation of the world. Let
only one hand go free, for the ceremonies of
the enchantment which I wish myself to
prove in your presence.”
The Indians seized this discourse with
avidity, which at the same time flattered their
warlike character, and excited their love for
the marvellous. After a short deliberation
they released one of the prisoner’s arms
The Scotchman begged that his sabre
should be delivered to the most skillful, the
most vigorous of the assembly; and uncov
ering his neck, after having rubbed it, while
stammering out some words with magical
signs, he cried with a loud voice, and gay
manner : “ See now. sage Indians, an incon
testible proof of my good faith. You, war
rior; who hold my sharp sword, strike with
all your strength: so far from separating my
bead from my 7 body, you will not even cut
the skin of my neck. Scarcely had ho pro
nounced these words, when the Indian giv
ing a terrible blow, made the head of the
sergeant fly off to the distance of twenty
steps. The astonished savages remained
immovable, regarding the bleeding body of
the stranger, then turning their looks upon
themselves, as if to reproach each other for
their stupid credulity. Nevertheless, admi
ring the ruse which the prisoner had em
ployed in order to avoid the tortures by hast
ening his death, they granted to liis corpse
the funeral honors of their country.—Ray

FROM CALIFORNIA.
Panama, Sept. 23 1, 1850.
Dear J.—l would not advise you to come
out here, for the Yellow Fever and Cholera
are both prevailing, although the authorities
try to keep it secret. lam now writing in
the Agents Office, and there 13 a mule driv
er in the next room dying of Cholera. At
Acapulco the Cholera has also been very bad,
but it is at present declining. So you see if
money is plenty, all other tilings are not the
rose. I found all things far superior at San
Francisco than I expected ; everything can
be had for m mey, but oysters in the half
eliell. lam afraid there will be much dis
tress this winter among the overland emi
grants who arrive too late for operations at
the mines, and among the merchants there
will bo many failures arising from their wild
speculations in lands and town lots, which are
rapidly declining, but after everything comes
down to its proper value, San Francisco will
go ahead again.
This western coast of America is destined
to become a great country. From Oregon
to the Straits of Magellan, its vast natural re
sources must be seen to be appreciated. It
abounds in metals of all kinds, and produces
grain with less labor than any other part ot
the world. Its scenery is grand and magni
ficent. Its harbors the safest, when entered,
aud easy of access. A Pilot is unknown, ex
cept at San Francisco, where it amounts to
a good sinecure.
1 stopped, as we came down, at Itealego,
and found produce of every kind it
not cheaper than at homo, and a plenty of
pretty Spanish Lasses, with their bright
black eyes and silky tresses ol a purplish
black. You ought to see me making love to
them in bail Spanish, with a heavy mous
tache and whiskers, my haircut an inch from
nty head, and curling—my costume, white
pants, red sash and blue shirt, makes mo a
perfect Mexican Dandy.

In Scrivcn County, on Wednesday, 16th inst.
by the Itev. Thos. Rambaut, Mr. GEORGE
ROBER TSON, Jr., of Savannah, to Miss ANNA
CAROLINE, daughter of Silas Morton, Esq., of

DIED.
In this City, on the 10th inst., EMILY C.
1 LIl IAU, in the ninth year of hei age. Death
” lienever it conies is indeed overwhelmuing,
being the sever’er of earth’s strongest ties; but
when an only and beloved child, in ihe full joy
ousness of innocence, and with the roses of health
still blooming in loveliness on its cheek, is sudden
ly removed from the loved embrace of its earthly
parents, oh! how agonizing. But three days pre
vious to this mournful event, Emilv was in h°r
usual good health and spirits, delighting the hearts
of her parents with her gladsome smiles, her
amiable manners, and kind attentions, for she
loved to please, and even seemed to anticipate
the wishes of those she loved. But alas! hid
forever now under the cold, damp earth, are those
attractive, those beloved features. Yet how
consoling the thought, even under such stunning
bereavement’as this, that a Father’s hand hath dealt
this blow, a Father who never willingly afflicts Ilis
children, but only for their eternal good. Afflic
ted Parents, your loved one lias escaped many
sorrows, is placed far beyond the reach of evil
influences, to which here she would have been
suoject, a:\d withdrawn from your own compan
ionship, is enjoying the socieiy of angels in a
brighter and happier home. Trust then in tile
faithfulness of your heavenly Friend, and in his
own good time, this seemingly mysterious Provi
dence will be made quite clear to your now ob
scured vision, for Himself lias said, “ Thou shall
know heieafter.”

more active and prompt in its operation on the
system. These facts have induced the subscri
