much grandeur, ever so much ele
„ r„.pro much desire ihateve
ryhotiv should he easy, in the
ture of things it cannot be: there
must always be some degree of
care and anxiety. The master of
the house is anxious to entertain
jjis quests; the guests are anxious
to be agreeable to him ; and no man
but a very impudent dog indeed,
can as freely command what is in
another man’s house as if it were
his own : whereas, in a tavern,
there is a general freedom from an
xiety. You are sure you are wel
come ; and the more noise you make,
the more trouble yon give, the more
good things you call for, the wcl
comer you are. No servant will at
tend you with the alacrity which
waiters do, who are incited by the
prospect of an immediate reward
in proportion as they please. No
sir ; there is nothing which has yet
been contrived by man, by which
so much happiness is produced, as
by a good tavern or inn.”
Archbishop Leighton used often
to say, that if he were to choose a
place to die in, it should he an inn.
Mistakes on Both Sides.—'S oil a ire
was one day speaking warmly in
praise of the physician Haller, in
presence of a person who was liv
ing in his house. “All, sir,” said
this person, “ifM. Haller would but
speak of your works as you speak
of his.” “Possibly we are both
mistaken,” said Voltaire.
Misers. —The passion for wealth
has worn out much of its grossness
by tract of time. Our ancestors
certainly conceived of money as
able to confer a distinct gratification
in itself, not alone considered simp
ly as a symbol of wealth. The old
est poets, when they introduce a
miser, constantly make him address
his gold as bis mistress; ns some
thing to be seen, felt and hugged ;
as capable of satisfying two of the
senses at least. The substitution of
a thin, unsatisfying medium for the
good old tangible gold, has made
avarice quite a Platonic affection
in comparison with the seeing
toubbing, and handling pleasures of
the old Chrysophiliiies. A bank
note can no more satisfy the touch
of a true sensualist in this passion,
than Creusa could return her hus
band’s embrace in the shades.
A miser is sometimes a grand
personification of Fear. He has
a fine horror of Poverty ; and he is
not content to keep Want from the
door, or at arm’s length—but be
places it, by heaping wealth upon
wealth, at a. sublime distance! —
Lamb.
Self Importance —Of such mighty
importance every man is to him
self, and ready to think he is so to
others ; without once making this
easy and obvious reflection, that
his affairs can have no more weight
with other men than theirs have
with him ; and how litile that is, he
is sensible enough.— Swift.
Love oj the Wonderful. —What
stronger pleasure is there with man
kind, or what do they earlier learn
or longer retain than ‘the. love of hear
ing and rcluterng things strange and
incredible . How wonderful a thincr
is tiic love of wondering and of raising
wonder! ‘tis the delight of children
to hear tales they shiver at, and the
vice ot old men to abound in strange
stoi ics of times past. We come in
to the world wondering at every
thing ; and when our wonder about
common things is over, we seek
something new to wonder at. Our
last scone is ot tell wonders of our
own, to all who will believe them.
And amidst all this, ’tis well if truth
comes oIT but moderately tainted.—
Shaftesbury.
Clerical Fops. —There is a class of
fops not usually designated bv that
epithet—men clothed in profound
black, wijh largecanes, and strange
amorphus hats—of big speech, and
imperative p resence—talkers about
Plato—great affecters of senility—
despiser ot women, and all the
graces ot life—tierce foes to com
rron-seiis.e abusive ot the livm° r ,
and approving no one who has not
been dead for at least a century.
Sbuch tops, as vain and as shallow
ns their fraternity in Bond street,
differ t’rom these only as Gorgonius
differed from Rufillus.— Sydney
Smith.
Discretion . —There is no talent
so useful towards rising in the world
or which puts men more out of the
reach ot fortune, than that quality
generally possessed by the dullest
sol '| °‘ ‘nen, and in common speech
ca eu discretion ; a species of lower
prut ence, by the assistance of which
peop lC ot the meanest intellects,
‘vi lout any other qualification,
t Hough the world in great
ranquilly, and with universal good
treatment, neither giving nor tak
, mg offence.— Swift.
Ilohj Bullies. —How true it is of
too many preachers, that which
Sydney Smith says of Dr. liennel,
“that he is too apt to put on the ap
pearence of a holy bull}', as if be
could carry his point against infideli
ty, by big words and strong abuse,
and kick and cuff men into Chris
tians.”
Curiosity. —-Curiosity is a kernel
of the forbidden fruit, which still
sticketh in the throat of a natural
man, sometimes to the danger of his
choking. — Fuller.
Want of a, Persuit. —A man with
out a predominant inclinnation is
not likely to be either useful or hap
py. He who is every thing is noth
ing.—Sharp.
Brandy-and- Water. —Of this mix
ture Chales Lamb said that it spoiled
two mod things.
Presents. —If presents be not the
soul of friendship, doubtless they
are the most spirital part of the
body in that intercouse. There is
too much narrowness of thinkingon
this point! The punctilio of accep
tance, methinks. is too confined and
straitened. I should be content to
receive money, or clothes, or a
joint of meat from a friend. Why
should he not send me a dinner as
well as a. desert ? 1 would taste him
in the beasts of the field, and
through all creation, — Lamb.
Infants. —Someadmiring what mo
tives to mirth infants meet with in
their silent and solitary smiles, have
resolved, how truly I know not,
that they converse with angels ; as,
indeed, such cannot among mortals
find any fitter companions.— Fuller.
ItcUigibiUtij. —It would be well,
both for the public and the writers
themselves, if some authors would
but adopt Lord Falkland’s method,
before publishing His works, who,
when he doubted whether a word
was perfectly intelligible or not,
used to consult one of his lady’s
chambermaids, (not the waiting
woman, because it was possible
she might be conversant in ro
mances,) and by her judgment was
guided whether to receive or reject
it. Swift pursed, it is said, a like
method of reading his works to the
unlearned.
Antiquity of Agriculture. The
first three men in the world were a
gardener, a ploughman, and a gra
zier ; and if any man object that the
second of these wa S rt murderer, I
desire he would consider, that as
soon as he was so, he quitted our
profession and turned builder. —
Cowley.
Mr. Perkins the Divine. —He had
a capacious head, with angles wind
ing and roomy enough for all con
troversial intricacies. He would
pronounce the word domn , with such
an emphasis as left a doleful echo
in his auditor’s ears a good while
a fte r w aid.— Fuller.
Suspicion. —Always to think the
worst, 1 have ever found to be the
mark of a mean spirit and a base
soul . —Bui ingbrokc.
Lying; . —Although the devil be
the father of lies, he seems, like oth
er great inventors, to have lost much
of his reputation, by the continual
improvements that have been made
upon him.— Swift.
The Healthy Man. —Of all the
know-nothing persons in this world,
commend us to the man who has
“never known a day’s illness.” He
is a moral dunce, one who lias lost
the greatest lesson in life ; who has
skipped the finest iecture in that
great school of humanity, the sick
chamber. Let him be versed in
mathematics,profound in metaphys
ics, a ripe scholar in the clasics, a
bachelor of arts, or even a doctor in
divinity ; yet is he as one of those
gentlemen whose education lias
been neglected. For all his college
acquirements, how mfenor is he in
useful knowledge to a mortal who
has had but a quarter’s gout, or half
a year’s ague—how infinitely be
low the fellow-creature who has
been soundly taught his tic-doulou
reux, thoroughly grounded in the
rheumatics, and deeply red in scar
let fever!’ And yet, what is more
common than to hear a great hulk
ing, florid fellow, bragging of an ig
norance, a brutal ignorance, that he
shares in common with the pig and
bullock, the generality of which die,
probably, without ever having ex
perienced a day’s indisposition?—
Ilood.
Plain Truth. —One of the subli
mest things in the world, is plain
truth !—l3 til we r.
An elderly gentleman, accus
tomed to “indulge,” entered the
room of a certain inn, where sat a
grave Friend by the fire. Lifting a
pair ot green spectacles upon his
forehead, rubbing his inflamed eyes
and calling for hot brandy and wa
ter, he complained to his friend that
“ his eyes were getting weaker and
weaker, and even spectacles didn’t
seem to do them any good.” “ i’ll
tell the friend,” replied the Quaker
“ what 1 think. If thee was to
wear thy spectacles over thy mouth
for a few months, thy eyes would
get sound again.”
