Steamer Magnolia.
The New-York correspondent of the
Morning News, gives the following descrip
tor) of the new Steamer Magnolia:
4-1 visited a very beautiful steam boat
yeterdny, called the Magnolia, which has
been built by Mr. Thos. Collyer of this city,
jndjntended to run between Savannah and
palatka, Florida, touching at all the principal
places on the route. Mr. M. A. Cohen, an
enterprising merchant of your city, is to act
ag agent, lam told. The ‘boat is not quite
completed yet, a little carpenter’s work re
mains unfinished, but it is expected that she
will get off by Saturday next. She is not
very large, but is a beautiful model, and fitted
up with neatness and elegance. The orna
ments are gold on a white ground,, and are
tpry tastetul. She has eight state rooms on
th# upper or promenade, and eight in the sa
loon on the main deck aft, from which you
descend to the berths, intended for the ser
vants, who will thus be within call, whenever
they are wanted. ‘There are accommoda
tions for seventy-five passengers, of whom*
about fifty will have state rooms. The fitting
up lias evidently been done with a view to
the comfort of the passengers, and indeed a
more commodious bout for her size I have
never seen. Her length is 140 feet, and 24
fr. 6 in. width of beam, and she has eight
feet depth of hold.
Her engine and boiler were constructed by
the celebrated firm of Rodman & Cos., at the
city Foundry in West st., and I think you
will say that the engine is a model one, and
that it reflects great credit upon the estab
lishment. It combines beauty and elegance,
with grent strength and durability, and pro
pelled the boat on her trial trip a few days
lioce. at the rate of about 20 miles an hour!
A remarkable degree of speed when we con
sider all the circumstances.
The engine has a 32 inch cylinder and 9
feet stroke —there are two boilers, each 24
feet long, and 5 feet diameter ; two sirioke
pipes and one spar. She has been supplied
with three life-boats of the most approved
construction.
The command of this beautiful boat has
been given to Capt. P. McN elty of your city ;
J. N. Rodman is the clerk, who is much re
spected here, an and remarkable for his civility
sod politeness.”
