Literary Gossip from tho Literary Wotld
J.T*ie New York Typographical Society
has determined to celebrate the approaching
anniversary of the birthday of Franklin by
un appropriate festival, and Judge Edmonds
has consented to deliver an address on the
occasion.
“ No man,” says an inteligent writer in the
Oxford (.Maine) Democrat, *• who loves his
race can lie indifferent to the Literature of
his country. The connection between Lit
erature and Liberty is of tho closest nature.
Literature goes to make up the mind and the
conscience of the people. It is not only the
exponant of the public conscience, hut it is
also its creator. The life of every people is
prolonged or shortened in exact proportion is
good or bad elements enter into the compos
tiou of its conscience. \\ e commend tins
truth to the conductors of all our popular
Magazines and Literary Periodicals. We
wish them well. We feel dec; ly interested
in their success They have the power ot
doing great good or great harm. It they wi!|
regard the mission oft heir cou try, imbue their
souls with a love of liberty, of humanity, and
of moral and social progress, their labors will
prolong the life of their country, aiid bless
*he human race.”
The following further memorandum of
Messrs. Appleton’s new enterprise in Broad
way, which we find in the Courier, is worthy
of chronic e, as a step in the accomodation ot
the arts to business purposes—the union
between the two having just been discovered
in Broadway to bo more intimate tnan here
tofore commonly supposed :—‘Messrs. Ap
pleton's new building is twenty ieet Wide
hiiJ one hundred and sixty leet deep ; it is
six stories High cbove the pavement, and two
Btories below. The front is ot the finest
brown free stone, cut in ’’the Romanesque
style of architecture, with arched window
ffames extending from the second through
the front of the third story, with massive
caps, and a heavy coi nice cut in stone over
the whole. In tho centre of tho building,
there is a large and brilliant skylight, through
which the light penetrates to the lowest
ground floor. The lower stories are wann
ed by furnaces; and the whole building is
abundantly supplied with tho Croton. Over
the front entrance to the building a niche
has been prepared for a has relief, in bronze,
from a design by LI. K. Browne, represen
ting the various trades and professions de
riving knowledge from u venerable man hold
ing an open book. The figures will be near
ly the size of life. Passing within this on
trance, we see the principal room of the
store—spacious, lofty and lined in the cen
tre of the front part, with tables and coun
ters for the display of books, while the shel
ves on the side are separated in the form of
alcoves, and stored with books. Further
back is a spacious area, beyond which are
the various business offices. The floor be
low is devoted chiefly to the wholesale de
partment; and all heavy boxes and bundles
pass out to the street from below.”
Anew weekly paper entitled, from the
name of the proprietor, “Parker’s Journal,”
•has made its appearance, Its form and ar
rangement are that of the late ‘Two Worlds,’
wi*h a general resemblance to Morris’s “old
Mirror. It has a wood engraving of the
4 to. size, by Matteson, of the “First Inter
view between Washington aud his Mother
after the Revolution.”
I i)e Dollar Newspaper, of Philadelphia,
is publishing anew “prize” tale by Mr. Mv
eis, author of “the Firstof the Knickerbock
ers, entitled “Bell Brandon ; or. the Great
Ken trip Estates—a Tale of New in
1810.” for which a premium of two hundred
dollars was paid.
“We have heard.” says the London Athe
naeum. ‘‘with great satisfaction of a munificent
offer made by Sir Edward Lytton Buhver t
the .close of some dramatic entertainments
which he lias been giving at Knebworth
the performers consisting of ilie company
of amateurs who usually play under the
managerial direction of Mr. Dickons. Sir
Edward proposes to write a play, to be acted
by that company at various places iu the
United Kingdom—the proceeds to form the
germ of a fund fora certain number of hous
es to be further endowed for literary men
and artists; and the play itself, if we under
stand rightly, to be Afterward disposed of
for the benefit of the fund. Sir Edward
will likewise give in fee, ground on his es
tate in Herts for the erection of such asy
lum, rest, retreat, or whatever else it may
be determined to call the residence in ques
tion. The actors—to whom a conspicuous
share in this good work will bo due, hope we
understand, to take the field in the Spring of
next year.

Turner’s Compound Fluid Extract of
CONY2A and STILLINGIA.
THIS Preparation is a highly Concentrated
Extract, containing all the Active Medicinal
Properties of the Conyza, (commonly known
as Black Root,) and the Stillingia, or Queen’,
Delight.
These Plants have long since been used among
our Southern Negroes and in empyrical practices
with the happiest results, in cases of Chronic
Rheumatism, Ulcers of long standing, and Sec
ondary Syphilis. It is much superior toanv pre
parations of Sarsaparilla as an alterative, being
more active and prompt in its operation on the
system. These facts have induced the subsen
bars to present to the attention of Physicians a
preparation prepared according to strict Chemi
cal and Parmaceutical science, devoid of all
the feculent and inert parts of the root, not doubt
ing that it will supercede the unscientific and
crude preparations hitherto used.
