In the spring of 1868, John M. Floyd and Company established the Weekly Southern Opinion as the weekly edition of their Daily Southern Opinion. Although founded around the same time that William Scrugg’s Republican Daily Opinion ceased publication, the Southern Opinion was a Democratic publication. Floyd organized an association of printers to publish the daily and weekly editions of his paper. The editors took a stance federal reconstruction, black suffrage, and bills that provided state funding for public education. The Southern Opinion was short-lived and ceased publication by the end of the decade.
