there are numerous instances of where
gentlemen from Rome go to Adairs
ville, Calhoun, etc., byway of Kings
ton, for the purpose of spending a
pleasant halfday shooting birds and
other game.
By the U .ited States Census of
1880, it is shown that Atlanta stands
third among all the cities in the Unit
ed States in the great proportion of its
population who are engaged in gainful
pursuits; in other words, in making
a living for themselves. Lawrence,
Mass., and Fall River, Mass., are the
only two cities in the country which
have a greater proportion of their pop
ulation engaged in what are termed
“gainful pursuits.”
We have not noticed the figures this
year; but several years ago we saw a
comparative statement of the number
of children in the public schools of At
lanta and Boston, Mass., respectively,
and the astonishing fact was shown
that Atlanta has proportionately a
greater number of children in her pub
lic schools than Boston, which has for
many years past been considered the
centre of education of the United
States.
The Western A Atlantic is the only
line in, the Smith, running four through
passenger trains per day each iray, from
one terminal to the other. It, there
fore, offers advantages over all other
lines for tourists going to Atlanta,
Florida or the Southeast.
Passengers in the North and West,
in purchasing tickets to Florida via the
Western & Atlantic Railroad have the
choice of three routes south of Atlanta.
No other line leading from the West to
Florida can offer such advantages.
The Western and Atlantic railroad
runs more passenger trains over the
same rails than any other railroad in
the South.
