The chairman of the republican committee,
Senator Dwight M. Sabin, of Minnesoln, is
the successor of Windom. Hs managed
madam's canvars so loyally tha. tho latter,
when he found himself defeated, gave all his
energies to the election of hie friend. So Sa
bin la in the senate at the age of forty, and
basjust been made chairman of the national re
publican committee for two or three reasons.
He is a millionaire. The republicans believe
In the', kind of "soap” whose use deflics char
acter.: The great parly of moral Ideas con
fesses Its Inability to win victory by any other
propeiis than debauching the morals of tho
people. Sabin Is a millionaire In middle life,
because the foundation of his fortune was
laid in a prison contract. He tumbled int<
life on a Connecticut mattress, and driftet
in c.^y manhood to Minnesota. He la a
brainy fellow, with the adamant cheek and
assurance that has made tha wooden nutmeg
state notorious. But ho has some money In
bis pocket, great orsmall.that he got from con
tract prison labor. Ills sad to record It, but
what la sald.of him by thoso who know him
must’.e written. It la said that he is a great or
fttiiiaer, which means of course that he
tnows when and where to distribute tho
"soup." He was a Dlaine man in I860, and
whon Conkling jumped on tho desk of tho
Tribune correspondent, and lightened the
exposition building with thumierleas sheet
lightning for Grant nnd his faithful SOU, Sa
lmi shouted: "Take him out,” in a voice
heard all over tho enclosure. Decently lie
has been interviewed, and has declared hlm-
eolf for Arthur. Tho fact that h’rye with
drew from tho contest for chairman ns soon
as it was apparent that Sabin could be utmu-
itnonsly chosen, however, makes It plain tiiat
the head of the committee is for iliaino, nnd
that the Author crowd lias been outwitted.
