BRYAN SAYS NEXT
REFORM IS BAN ON
DOUBLE STANDARD
MIAMI, Fla., March 16, The next
great reform due in the United
States, William Jennings Bryan be
lieves, is .the elimination of the
double standard of morals and the
elevation of men to the same high
level of personal conduct they de
mand of women.
Woman suffrage, in Mr. Bryan’s
opinion, will further this ideal.
In an article in the March 13 Is
sue of Colllr’s Weekly, Mry Bryan
urges the abolition of social immo
ality as a national issue.
He has urged that tne principles of
the single standard be written into
thg constitution of the state of Ne
braska.
“The overthrow of the saloon
would, of itself, have been sufficient
to prepare the ground "for the reform
which we have under consideration,”
Mr. Bryan writes, “since alcohol con
tributed In many ways to sexual im
morality. It unloosens the animal in
man.
"The saloon was the copartner of
every vice and the proomter of every
form of sin. . . . The country
went more than half-way toward the
elimination of the social evil when
it banished the drinking place.
"The fight against sexual sins will
be much easier than the fight against
the saloon, because there are no
vast combinations of capital ready
to furnish an unlimited corruption
fund.
“The church will naturally lead in
this reform, for the Bible s-- ' s in
no uncertain terms on this great
subject. The Master protested with
an emphasis unequaled by anyone be
fore or since against the discrimina
tion then existing—and still existing
—against women: ‘He that is with
out sin among you, let him first
cast a stone at her,' is a ringing
challenge to that spirit of injustice
which stones the woman to death
while it excuses the man.
“While the church will avail itself
of all arguments, scientific at well
as economic, its strongst appeal will
be to the conscience.
“It will apply the law of service
and use the power of love. While It
holds up before the woman the ideal
of perfect purity, it will force man
to consider the unspeakable selfish
ness of one who, for a moment s
fleetin gpleasure, will blast a human
life and drag down to the bottomless
pit one made in tht image of the
Creator.”
Peruvian Legation
In Bolivian Capital
Is Attacked by Mob
LIMA, Peru, March 15. —The Peru
vian legation at La Paz, the Bolivian
capital, was attacked last night by
a mob of a thousand men, according
to official advices receive-d this aft
ernoon by the Peruvian foreign of
fice. The Peruvian consulate and
private residences of Peruvians were
also attacked, the dispatches declare.
The government shields on the of
ficial building were torn down and
windows were broken.
The Peruvian minister and the
consul, with their families, were at
the theater when the outbreak oc
curred. They were escorted to their
residences by the American minister
and the British charge, the message
adds.
The American charge d’affaires at
Lima held a long conference today
with President Porras and officials
of the Peruvian foreign office. Presi
dent Porras was expected to appear
before congress this evening and
make a full statement regarding the
situation.
Feeling between Peru and Bolivia
has been running high of late be
cause of a sharp revival of the ques
tion of a sea outlet for Bolivia in
the former Peruvian province of
Arica, one of the two provinces tak
en over by Chile as the result of the
war of 1879-83.
Memorial Proposed for
Late Senator Bankhead
WASHINGTON, March 16.—As a
memorial to the late Senator Bank
head, last survivor of the Confeder
ate armies of the Civil war to sit in
the upper house of congress, Charles
Lathrop Pack, president of the Amer
ican Forestry association, has sug
gested that the Bankhead national
highway from Washington to San
Diego, Cal., be planted on each side
with memorial trees. The idea was
suggested in a telegram to Judge B.
M. Allen, of Birmingham, Ala., presi
dent of the Bankhead Highway asso
ciation, which meets in Hot Springs,
Ark., April 16.
“Roads of remembrance,” suggest
ed by the association, with trees
planted along their border in mem
ory of men who died in the war
against Germany, the association
says, are rapidly becoming popular,
particularly in the south, and the
Bankhead memorial would be a fit
ting accompaniment to the move
ment. At Savannah, Ga.; Tampa,
Fla., and Macon, Ga., plans are un
der way for planting road sections
accordingly.

18 Americans Now
Sleep in Home Soil
Eighteen bodies of American sol

overseas, all coming from England,
according to the Stars and Stripes,
Washington, D. C.
There are 2,500 bodies in the Lon

in Great Britain.
Os the eighteen bodies, five have
been buried at Arlington national

fell in the world war. The others
were sent to various points on re

Preparations are being made at

This generous offer is made by
th<) inventor of a wonderful “all
day-and-night” working method
which is to be used to tone up and
strengthen the relaxed muscles,
thereafter doing away with painful
trusses altogether, and the necessity
for dangerous cutting operations.
Used to Restore Tone, Elas
ticity and Strength to
the Muscles
|| Here is great, good news for
ra Rupture .sufferers.
E Perhaps you have almost given
I up hope of ever getting freljp.
j Yet “Rupture can be treated with
| success,” says Mr. Stuart, "when the
method of treatment is scientific
I and in accord with good common
1 sense."
Muscle-Crutches Useless
To successfully and permanently
relieve this condition the treatment
must restore the lost elasticity,
E tone, and contractile strength to
the weakened muscles. This a
truss (call it by what name you
will) cannot be expected to do. On
the contrary, the harmful pressure
it exerts still further reduces the
strength of the muscular tisues be
cause it tends to retard the circula
tion of the blood.
Stop Using a Truss
Ilf you should fall down and break
your leg, you would not be satis
fied to get a pair of crutches and
use them to hobble around on for
the rest of your life, without doing
a thing for the fracture. Why,
then, should a ruptured person re
sign himself to a lifetime of truss
wearing, without doing anything
I for the weakened muscles, which
3 are the real cause of the trouble?
Used for a Double Pur-
pose
First: The primary and most im
portant object of the PLAPAO
PADS IB to keep constantly applied
to the relaxed muscles, the medica- i
tion called Plapao. which i s con- ■

medicated mass is intended to in
crease the circulation of the Mood,
thus revivifying the muscles and re
storing them to their normal
strength and elasticity. Then, and
not until then, can you expect the
rupture to disappear.
Second: Being made self-adhesive,
purposely to prevent the pnd from
shifting, they have therefore proven
to be an important adjunct in re
taining rupture that cannot be held _
by a truss.
Hundreds of people, old and
young, have gone before an officer

swore that the PLAPAO-PADS
cured their ruptures—some of them
most aggravated cases—and of long

The P!apao-Pad Explained
The principle upon which the Plapao-
Patl works can be easily figured out by
noting the below illustration, and read
ing the following explanation:
The PLAPAO-PAD is made of a
strong, material "E," which is
designed to conform to the movements
| of the body, and be perfectly comfort
i able to wear. Its inside surface is ad
| hesive (similar to, yet quite different
from am adhesive plaster)—to prevent

"A“ is the enlarged end of the PLA
PAO-PAD, which overlies the atrophied
and weakened muscles to keep them
from giving way further.
”B” is the properly shaped Pad, to
be applied in such away that it blocks
up the hernial orifice, and tends to pre
vent the contents of the abdomen from
protruding. Within the Pad is a reser
voir. In this reservoir there is placed
a wonderful absorbent-astringent medi- <
cation. As soon as this medication is
warmed by the heat of the body it be
comes soluble and escapes through the
small opening marked “C” and is ab
sorbed through the pores of the skin to
strengthen the ruptured structures and .
weakened muscles.
■ ”’ is the long end of the PLAPAO-

the body, calculating to give the neces
sary solidity, and support to the PLA

WASHINGTON, March 16. —The

ernor E. M. Ammons, C. W. Pace, of
Longmont, and C. W. Swayze, of

house agricultural committee in op
position to the Anderson bill for the
licensing of the packing industry.
“I am fully convinced,” Mr. Pace
said, “that the inevitable result of
the enactment of this measure would
be vast Injury to the live stock men,
while at the same time bringing no
benefit to the consumer. I feel that
it would be the same as It was with
the railroads when they were under
government control.
"Even under a licensing system,
the big packers would be much bet
ter prepared to protect themselves
than would the smaller concerns. By
the time the administrators of the
law would get the big packers where
they want th«m they would have ev
ery small packer out of business.”
Mr. Swayze declared that the large
majority of people in the cattle rais
ing districts are against government
licensing of packe-.-s. He submitted
a number of petitions of Colorado
granges in opposition to the bill.

UPON THEIR OATH
The following, taken at random from hundreds of letters which we
have on file, each one of which has been sworn to, prove positively
that STUART’S PLAPAO-PADS are a successful treatment for Rup
ture. Your own experience has proven that the truss will not cure and tj
that it is in every way unsatisfactory. Then why continue to wear it? g

St. Louis, Mo.
Gentlemen:—
When I became ruptured I commenced
wearing a steel spring truss, and It was
almost as bad as the rupture, for it
made a dent in my hip. and at night
when I would take It off, I could not
sleep for a long time—the place would
itch and pain me so, where the truss
pressed on my hip bone.
I saw in the New Orleans Item your
adv. and wrote at once and got your
question blank and filled it in, and in a
short time I received the Plapao-Pads.
I put the first one on, and was surprised
to see how much- more comfortable it
was —I could work and never feel I had
it on. I carried bales of moss weighing
150 lbs. and lifted them above my head
and into a wagon. I am thankful now
at the age of 57, to be able to',say that
I am sound and well, and never have
to stop -work.
I always will recommend the Plapao-

know what they have done for me. You

WOOD LEADS IN
G. 0. P. PRIMARY
IN MINNESOTA
ST. PAUL, Minn., March 16.—Min
nesota’s Republican preference pri
mary, held last night in rain, sleet
and snow sto'rms and terrific gales,
gave Major General Leonard Wood a
plurality of 4,000 votes over Senator
Hiram Johnson, of California, on the
face of available returns. Herbert
Hoover, not an avowed candidate, re
ceived such strong supoprt in St.
Paul and Minneapolis that returns
from 450 precincts showed him lead
ing Governor Frank O. ‘Lowden, of
Illinois, by more than 1,000 votes.
The vote for Mr. Hoover was large
ly a voluntary one, his name being
written on the ticket by the voters.
The latest tabulation showed the
following vote: Wood, 12,627; John
son, 8,517; Hoover, 4,486; Lowden,
3,510.
The totals include a majority of
the precincts in St. Paul and Minne
apolis., The returns from the rural
districts were very slow coming in
and late in the night all wires were
prostrated by the high winds and
snow, and in most counties the polls
were open only from 7:30 to 8:30
