The uheels of justice were started
grinding Monday morning In the city
court before Judge Calhoun und by the
time court adjourned the machine had
been worked overtime.
l*urge bunches t^f culprits gathered
In by the utty ami county police and
charged with petty mlsdemeanora
pleaded guilty and were handed pack
ages of various weight*"by the Judge,
while others were arraigned before Ju
ries to have their cases decided.
And In the rush of the wheels of
Justice there were a fen tragedies of
life, nil of which didn't mean much to
th* spectators and officials, hut they
meant lots lo those Interested.
For Instance, the case of John Hor
ton Aged, sick and hardly able to
walk. h» was on trial charged with,
cheating nnd swindling. He got credit
from M store and couldn't pay the bill
on time, although It la less than a
month alnca lie gut the goods.
It was charged he got the credit on
the strength of the assertion that h«
was working lo a cotton mill, while In
reality It was only hls four children
who were working.
An aged wife with a face pinched
by hard work and hunger sat by hi*
*lde and th6 children were near by
with tear-stained faces. It was all
rushed through and the caaa given to
the Jury. Little attention was paid to
it by those In the court room, but the
keen observer could not help notice the
looks—half fear, half hope—that thla
little family gave the Jurymen as they
retreated to th* Jury room. And they
w ere at III there w hen several other
cases had been finished.
