M. M. Richey, the new manager of
the south and western divisions of the
Southern railway system, was in At
lanta Tuesday and closed a contract
by- which his headquarters will be lo
cated In a suite of offices on the tenth
floor of the Candler building.
Mr. Richey and his force of seven
office men are. expected to arrive In
Atlanta and open their headquarters
next Monday. This tH the flrst step
of the Southern toward locating any
department of their Important operat
ing headquarters In this city.

Moat <)f the 40,000 employees of the
Southern railway have made contribu
tions toward the erection of a monu
ment td the late Samuel Spencer. As
was stated some weeks ago, the monu.
ment Is to be erected on the esplanade
of the Atlanta Terminal etatlon at
cost of about 150.000.
The contributions are made In the
Shape of slips turned In to the time
keepers of the different divisions.
These slips Anally reach the treasurer
of the Spencer memorial fund. Re
port* from all the divisions covering
nearly 8,000 miles of rails, are to the
effect that nearly all of the employees
have contributed.

The wild west show Is now preparing
to leave Nashville, where the past win
ter 1ms been spent, nnd the park there
bus been offered to Pawnee Bill again
next winter. But he wants to come to
Atlanta, nnd his friends are now pre
paring to make application to the park
commission for the use of Piedmont
park.
The coming to Atlanta of this show
means the coming of between 350 ami
400 horses, 75 or 80 men and the em
ployment of laborers nnd mechanics
during tho winter. It takes thousands
of dollars to maintain the big outfit
during tho winter and this money will
he spent in Atlnntn. All the curs <>f tho
trains are overhauled and painted and
the**same l« done with the wagons,
harness and other things used. •
The men are paid every month anti
the money they receive would be large,
ly spent here. As nn Illustration of the
money spent In Naahvllle during the
past winter it might bo mentioned that
on one car alone It required $500 worth
of gold leaf.

General Boyd has issued a circular
to the adjutant generals throughout the
country, saying:
“Permission to enter and pass
through the state of South Carolina,
under arran and In uniforms, en route
to nnd from the Jamestown Exposi
tion during tho present year. Is hereby
granted to all bodies of the organized
militia of the several states and terri
tories of the United States.’*

Charlotte. N. C., March 28.--Dr. John
R. Brooks, for many years a prominent
leader and figure In the Methodist
church In North Carolina and formerly
located In ChaNotte as presiding elder,
Is dead after an Illness of a few; weeks.
Dr. Brooks had just returned from a
visit to his son, u physician in the
army, located on the Island of Cuba,
and was stopping In Wilson, N. C.,
when the end came. The deceased wa
largely Instrumental in founding Trln
Ity Methodist church, one of the lead
Ing churches of this city. Dr. Brooks
lost his wife about one year ago.

Gainesville, Fla.. March 28.—An
alarm called the entire fire department
of the city at 11 o’clock Tuesday
morning to the Eddlns^ Manufacturing
Company’s huge’ plant. In spite of
every effort made the large building
the south western portion of the
works, containing an immense amount
of valuable machinery, was totally de
stroyed, Involving a losa of at least
$25,060, with an Insurance of $10,000.
No cause of the fire can be assigned.
It Is the Intention of the company to
rebuild immediately.

Abbott, the well-known Georgia edu
cator who died In Baltimore, wan «
brother of II. L. Abbott, local manager
of the Postal Telegraph Company, of
this city, and also of L. J. Abbott, of
the Georgia Fertiliser Company,
was well known In Columbus, where he
was highly esteemed ns an earnest and
efficient teacher and man of ability.

os Nellie Armrtrong, who says she Is
one of the party of English Imml
grants, who, after spending about
twelve months In the South, were start
ed back home a few weeks ago with

The woman declares that she wanted
to return with the othere. but somehow
lost track of their movements. Nearly
all of the English girl* have gone back
to Old England, but n very few of the
girls preferred to make America their
home, and are working at various

poisoning during the past ten days. One
day last week twenty-five persons who
attended a reception were made ill
from eating Ice crenm, and laBt Satur

Frank McGhee was critically 111 from
eating Ice cream.

Walker, the negro who killed Chief

yesterday to be hanged April 15.

Panama canal commission has filed a
claim for 219,000*against the local gov
ernment for tents nnd food supplied to
the earthquake sufferers. The com
mission will bo asked to waive Its
claim.
The earthquakes aro recurring. There
have been six sharp shocks since Fri

Valdosta, Ga., March 28.—Dr. L. G.
Hardman, of Commerce, Ga., state sen
ator from his district and prominent In
political circles of North Georgia, was
married in this city Tuesday night to
Miss Emma Grillln, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jasper Newton Grillln. The
ceremony was performed about 10
o’clock at the family home and was
witnessed only by the Immediate fam
ily. The couple left for points North
feature of the Atlanta schools. The
visits have proven an education along
n practical line, and many of the teach
ers have been given a new insight into
one of the most wonderful examples of
modern enterprise—the making of a
dally newspaper.
The visits of the schools will con
tinue through the remainder of the
school year, or until every school has
paid its visit.
