The city and pouhty authorities will

to have the streets sprinkled with oil
hereafter.

Washington, April 6.—Transfers and
promotions In the consular service were
made yesterday by the president.
Thornwell Haynes, of South Caro
lina, Is promoted to be a consul general
of class 6 (14.000), at Singapore, vice
David F, Wilbur, promoted.
Mr. Ilaynee Is now a consul of class
6, at Nanking, where he has served
one and a half years and previously at
Rouen for live years.
Edward J. Morion, of Tennessee, ap
pointed a coneul of dees 9 (IS,000), at
Asuncion, Purnguuy.

Chlcngo, April 6.—With a desire to
relieve his conscience, Walter Creed,’
hged 19, went to the Harrlon street
station last night and to Lieutenant
Morror confessed having murdered his.
cousin tn St. Louis, where he Is sought
by the police. Creed, according to his
story, stabbed and wounded Joseph
Robbins, uged 27, on Christmas Eve u
year ago. Since that time Creed has
been In a dozen cities. Self-defense wae
the reason given by Creed for having
committed the deed.

has made a profound Impress on his
hearers.
Tho First and Second Baptist
churches have united In a great four
weeks’ revival. The first two weeks
will be at the Hirst church and the larft
two at the Second church, the congre
gations uniting In aiding each other.
Dr. Wharton Is nn evangelist of the
old school—he believes In the simple
old-time religion and preaches It with
power and effectiveness. At the opon-
ng service Thursday, with a great con
gregation present. Dr. Landrum Intro
duced Dr. \Vburton to his people.
A splendid chorus choir hoe been
formed of the church membership and
good music Is going to help wonderful
ly In the services. It Is proposed to
urrange the hours for un afternoon and
night service dally.

tho Grand, Dr. Wharton will address a
mats meeting of the Atlanta Baptist

CLAIMED BY DEATH
Mrs. Mary A. Holland, wife of tbs
late Dr. S. G. Holland, and one of the
oldest residents of Atlanta, died at her
residence, 86 Park street. West End,
Thursday at noon.
Mrs. Holland was Miss Mary Bussey
before her marriage to Dr. Samuel Hoi.
land. She waa not only well acquaint'
ed In Atlanta, but was known all over
the state. She had a wonderful
knowledge of the history of her native
state, of Its families and traditions.
Two sons survive her, Dr. Frank Hoi-
land, one of Atlanta's best physicians,
and S. J. Holland, of Chicago. Mrs.
Holland resided with her niece. Miss
Mary Strother, during the latter part
of her life.
The funeral Services will be conduct
ed Saturday morning at 11 o’clock, the
arrangement* hriving been Uelayed un
til the arrival of her son from Chicago.
The Interment will be In Westvlew
cemetery. The following gentlemen will
act as pallbearers: Dr. Artos Fox. G.
J. Dallas, R. 8. Rust. Sr., Dr. S. W.
Foster, C. E. Currier and Judge Henry
Tanner.

RUSHING WORK FORWARD

Chattanooga, Tenn.. April S.—Work
on the luck and dam at Hale’s Point,
/Ixteen miles below the city In the
Tennessee river, which has been going
on steadily for sct'eml months, will be
pushed along rapidly this summer. Ar
rangements are being made to double
the force o fmen as soon us the river
gets low enough to permit work In
mid-stream. Work on the site for the
power plant will ulso begin during the
next tew weeks.
Present prospects are that the big
power plant will be completed and In
operation Inside of a year.

Is In progress at Barnssvllle over the de
composed remains of a negro named
Stokes, who was last seen about a
week ago driving Dr. Jeems, “an Indian
doctor." who had hired Stokes snd his
mule nnd buggy for n trip from Allen
dale to Barnwell, with the "doctor's
wife.” The three were seen a week
ago near whero the negro's body wus
found, and the day after the Indian
and his wife were In Barnwell, It Is
charged, trying to trade off the team.

keeping the mall clerks busy spreading
broadcast throughout the elate let'
ters and petitions for aid In the light
for the passage of a state prohlbllon
bill.
Letters are being «nt to every mem.
her of tho general assembly asking him
to vole for two measures at the forth
coming session—the Anti-Jug bill and
the State Prohibition bill.
After mailing these, the league be
gan sending out A petition to ministers
and league workers throughout the
state. Another form of letter was sent
lo "mothers’ wives snd daughters," snd
still another to "school boards, teach
ere and pupils.’’
Big Petition Expected.
It Is hoped by the offlceVs of the
league that the petition to be sent to
the legislature, asking for state pro
hibition, will be signed by a half-mil*
lion names or more. A separate peti
tion lo being circulated among "bank
ers, manufacturers and busnesa men."
Resolutions wero adopted st ths lost

providing for s campaign for state
prohibition, and the Icaguo officials arc
doing their utmost along this line.
The resolution provided that the leg
islature be petitioned to call fot*-a spe
cial election, the people to decide by
their votes whether or not they wanted
