terian Hospital are still holding their
"•pning bees” on Thursday, to which
all friends are Invited. While quite an
amount of work has already been done,

Gertrude Stallings.
Gertrude Stallings, 3-year-old child
of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Stallings, of At
lanta avenue and Grant street, died
Wednesday morning after a brief Ill
ness of meningitis. The little girl was
taken 111 Sunday with measles and! this
was followed Tuesday by an attack of
meningitis. Mr. Stallings, the father,
Is a member of the firm of McGahee &
Stallings, merchants In West Peach
tree street. Funeral services wljl be
conducted Thursday afternoon at 3
o'clock at tlie residence. The Interment
will be In Westvlew cemetery.

CONVICT KILLED
TRYING TO ESCAPE
FROM STOCKADE

Raleigh. N. C., April 17.—Three
young convicts, C. L. Scruggs, Jack
Williams and Dodd Wilton, all white,
made nn attempt to escape from the
state prison today shortly before noon.
They pried a board from the stockade
and succeeded In getting into the open
before the guard saw them. At the
drat shot Scruggs fell shot through the
body and died Instantly. Neither Wil
liams nor Wilson were hit and both
were captured after a long chase.
WATERWORKS PROBLEM

Columbus, Ga., April 17.—The water
works problem Is still a problem. The
hope, that It would be solved by the
proposition of the Hudson Engineering
Compgny I* now about lost because of
the failure of the city to accept, the
city Insisting on a flve-rear contract
under bond and the bonding companies
refusing to stand good for more than
a year's contract.

by her next friend, Floyd Hill, has filed
suit In the superior court for 63,500
against the Columbus Railroad Com
pany, alleging that she was severely
Injured by being run Into by a street
car of tho company while riding In a
buggy.
