'DUFFIE LYNCHING
WAS A FAKE STORY
Sheriff A. W. Hawes, Of McDtittle
county, denies moat emphatically the
story sent out from Denting, McDuf
fie county. Tuesday, that Charles Dar
rin. a negro farm hand, had been
lynched for the murder of a prominent
white farmer, Haydeh Pearson.
Sheriff Hawes wrote Governor Ter-
ell that Pearson was not killed, and
while seriously Injured, will probably
recover. He says that the negro wna
not lynched, but that according to re
port! he was whipped In Columbia
county. No effort was made to run the
negro's family away.
DYNAMITE IS UNCERTAIN;

“High explosives ore as freakish

Captain John Monaghan Friday, In
discussing the miraculous escape of
Mrs. Julia McCarthy Wednesday night,
when an Infernal marhlne, loaded with
dynamite, exploded, Inillctlng compar

It practically demolished her room.

han, “nor what they are going to do
when they get storied.
"The escape of Mra. McCarthy re
calls to my mind a similar experience
which a fellow whose name I have for
gotten went through In Atlanta several
years ago.
"The man, who lived on Chappel
street, had made an enemy In eome
way who decided to get rid of him.
Two attempts were made to blow up
his house with dynamite. Tlje first
one tore away u part of tho porch and

no harm to the man.

Aged Man Commits Suicide,
Due to 111 Health, It
Is Believed.

Canon, Ga., May JO.—'IV. M. Moore,
better known as “Uncle BUlIe.” com
mitted suicide yesterday by drowning.
He left his home at about 0:30 o’clock,
walked about two and a half miles to
the creek* near Duncans Mill*, took
pff his coat and vest on the bank of a
lake near the creek, tied his hands to
gether with a piece of hickory bark and
Jumped Into the water. His body was
recovered about 3 o'clock. He had been
superintendent of the Sunday school
for n number of years, and hod led n
consistent life since boyhood. He was
a member of the Baptist church of thlB
place. He leaves a wife and two sons,
O. U Moore, who holds a. responsible
position with the Seaboard road at
Athen*. and Berry Moore, of Atlanta.
Mr. Moore had been In very feeble
health for several weeks.

J. Jackson, of Wlnnsboro. a member of
tho fourth-class South Carolina Mili
tary Academy,' waa' drowned late yes
terday afternoon off the Isle of Palms
while ewtmmlng beyond his depth.
The cadets were holding their annual
picnic and the drowning occurred In
eight of hundreds of young people.
The body of the cadet waa found late,
last night on the beach. .

ABOUT WAR EXHIBIT
Norfolk, Va., May 10.—The grounds
of the Jamestown Exposition were In
vaded yesterday afternoon by 500 Japa
nese sailors from the cruisers Tsukuba
and Chltose, now at anchor In Hamp
ton Roads.
They made a wild rush for the guns
and other Implements of war and some
of the sailors cllmbeih over the shoul
ders of their fellows In order to get to
the exhibit. The visitors were tendered
a reception at the Soldiers’ and Ball-
ora' homo.

attached to the command of Oeneral
Barry, military commander In Cuba,

the Pacific slope and all the principal
cities of Oregon and Washington have
adopted the new system within the
last few months. Southern delegate,
will report that all the Independent
plants In Alabama have been enlarged
and that half a score of Tennessee clt-

Compressed Cotton Rate. •
Hanie Jordan, president of the
Southern Cotton Association, has peti
tioned the Georgia railroad commission
for a lower rate on compressed cotton,
and a hearing has been set for June 5.
Under predbnt regulations the rate on
cotton, whethor compressed or not. Is
practically the same. President Jordan
thinks compressed cotton Is entitled to
a lower rating.
'Quake in 8iberia.
London, May lo.—Dispatches from
Irkutsk, Siberia, say that.city was tq-
day severely shaken by an earthquake.
No details were given.

LIGHTNING STRIKES BARN,
BURNING ALL BUILDINGS

Halcyondale, Ga., May 10.—W. D.
Carswell, of this county, lost all his
buildings. Including born, stables and
other outhouses, on Monday night.
Lightning struck hts barn and the
other houses caught from It. He lost
about 160 bushels of com. a largo
amount of fodder and hay. He had no
Insurance.
