Macon, Go., Aug. SS.—On the charge
of not walking his heat with the din
patch that he should have done, Pa.
trolman T. B. Jones was tried before
the police committee and dismissed
from the force. Alderman Boifdra ap
peared before the committee and re
ported that he saw Patrolman Jones
sitting down at two different places on
the Bridge Row beat.
The patrolman stoutly denied the
charge. Had he admitted breaking
this police regulation he would have
been given a. small fine or suspended
for a few days, but under th. circum
stances the committee decided to drop
him from the force. The aldermen
who sat upon the case were Dure and
Williams.

Macon, Qa.. Aug. 21.—Lieutenant
William H. Holloman, of the Macon
police force, and Miss Lula Davidson,
also of this city, wero united In mar
riage Wednesday night by Rev. T. W.
Callaway. The couple tried to keep
the marriage a secret, but several fel
low officers on the police force learned
of the marriage and It was made
known Thursday afternoon. After
days' honeymoon Lieutenant H<
m and his Dride will return to Ma
con, making thla city their futuro
home. •

Macon, (la., Aug. 23.—When Mrs. B.
Thomas, who Uvea on Ilasel stret, re
ceived a typewritten letter asking her
to meet the writer at the Spring street
bridge, she Immediately turned the let
ter over to her husband and brother.
Instead of Mrs. Thomas being on hand
at the appointed time her husband and
her brother were there.
It hapeened that a young man named
Barron, collector for a local furniture
house, arrived about the same time,
and not knowing the young man both
Thomas and Milligans set upon Barron,
beating him badly, thinking he was the
sender of the letter. But the men had
made a mistake, and both were sum
moned to appenr In the recorder's
court to answer to the charge of disor
derly conduct.

wholesale dry goods firm on Pryor
street, six stockholders of ths former
company Thursday morning filed ap
plication for a charter In the office of
the clerk of the superior court.
The Incorporators of ths new Arm are
Mrs. It. B. Ridley, Dr. R. U. Ridley, C.
J. Williamson, of Fulton county, and
J. F. Ridley, of DeKalb. and W. H.
Wyatt, of Cobb county. Ths new Arm
will be known aa ths Ridley-William-
son-Spaln Company, with a capital
stock of 1150,000 and will deal In
wholesale dry goods and notions.
Th. company will begin business De
cember 1 and will occupy ths store
formerly used by ths Evsrett-Rldl.y
company. The other stockholders of
the-dissolved Arm, it Is said, will or
ganise a new business and will occupy
ths building now being erected by Qov.

tic meeting tvns held Thursday evening
by the Retail Clerks' Union, and plans
were made to participate In the big

the unions of the city are preparing to
take part. C. F, K. Mungcr and Mr.

of the meeting. The clerks will com
mence preparing for the parade, and

ward that haa been offered for the cap.
ture of I^ot-ey Givens, the escaped con
vict from ths nibb Brick Company, has
not yet been picked up, although no
less than Afty deputies and oAlcers
have been doing thslr best to earn this
coin. Givens mado good his escape
over a week ago, and although Arsd
upon by one of the camp guards, he
succeeded In outdistancing nls pursu
ers. It has been reported that he Is
In tha vicinity of Valdosta.

Macon. Qa.. Aug. 22.—Two negroes,
Arthur Sherrell and Georgs Cummings,
who escapMl from the camp of the Bibb
Brick Company Tuesdny evening, art
still at large, although efforts have been
made to capture them. The men made
a break for liberty latt Tuesday after
noon, coolly walking through the lines
and then making a break. As soon as
the guards saw them three shots were
tired. It Is thought that Cummings was
•hot. Arthur Cummings Is a 20-ycar
convict and Sherrell a ten-year man.
$105,000 IN TAXES
REMAINS TO BE PAID.

Macon, Ga., Aug. 22.—So far this
year the city has collected through
Marshal Walter B. Chapman's office
taxes amounting to about 2120,000,
leaving about 2105,000 yet due. Mnny
of the large taxpayers i>ald their full
taxes for the year In one round sum
during the spring.

James Hughes doesn't believe In
banks. At leaat, he didn't until Wed
nesday night, when he lost his pocket,
book, with all the savings of years.
Mr. Hughes keeps a beer saloon at
666 Decatur street, and for several
years he had added to the roll In his
purse until he had between 22,500 and
23,000 In It. Last night he dropped It,

Columbus. Ga., Aug. 22.—The Topoy
Hosiery mill, which was moved here
from Missouri about two years ago, has
been compelled to Increase the capacity
to such an extent that one hundred
more hands will be employed. New
machinery Is being received dally and
an annex Is In course of erection which
wilt accommodate the machinery and
the Increase In the number of opera
tives. v

Company Refuses to Let
Its Books Be Probed.
New York, Aug. 22.—Ths heads of
ths Interborough-Metrolltan Company
have refused to open their books to the
public service commission. The com
mission has been notified that because
the company Is not a corporation, but
morel}* a holding concern, It Is ths
belief of Its officers that the Inter-
ugh-Metrepolltan Is not within the
Jurisdiction of ths commission. This
jeeamo known last evening after the
adjournment of the continued Inves
tigation by ths commission Into the
local railroads.
The practical effect of tills devsl
opment may he to bring up the
question of ths constitutionality of the
act which brought the public service
commission Into being. Unless ‘the
commission and Mr. Ivins can have
access to these books It will bt Im
possible for Mr. Ivins to prove his fre
quently repeated statement that there
has been Improper Inflation of the as
sets of the merged companies.
