DRUGGISTTESTIFIES
Had Suffered With An At

Memphis.
Raleigh, N. C., Oct. 4.—Th# trial of Dr.
Rowland and his wife will not be finished
l\r Saturday night, even If Judge Long re
quires night sessions of oonrt tonight and
Saturday night. That Is the opinion ex
pressed todsy by lawyers on both sides.
The defense really did not begin until to-
>lny, though the state rested half sn hour
before adjournment last evening.
The witnesses examined today Included
s druggist and a boarding bouae keeper, of
Portsmouth, Va., a mall carrier of Memphli,
Tenn., snd a dozen Raleigh people. Their
♦•vldence went to show that tno alleged pol-
►oned man. Engineer Strange, suffered from
lifirt trouble uttacka In Memphis snd
rnrtsmouth.
The druggist had filled prescriptions y
♦on bv Memphis doctors calling for heart
stimulants several times.
The boarding house proprietress
Strange told her of former attacks; that
ho had attacks while boarding with her In
IM; that her own husband died from heart
trouble, and so she was alarmed when she
funeral took place the next nay alter
death at his advice, and not becausa Row
land or Mrs. Strange hurried It. The
Mtu® liar lug attempted to prove Dr. Row
land was drunk the day Strange died,
April 6, four witnesses today testified that

jary to go near the place where
Engineer Strange and wife boarded, testi
fied that Dr. Rowland attended sick mem-
hers In their families during the winter of

When court adjourned for dinner It was
the general understanding that a night ses-
slon would be held.
SPENT $111,100
ON CITYSCHOOLS
That Sum Represents Per
manent Improvements
Past Year.
Atlanta has paid mor. for permanent
Improvements for school purposes this
year than has been paid any year for
more than ten years.
Alderman E. C. Peters, chairman of
the finance committee, Is authority for
this statement, and, needless to aay, he
knows whereof he speaks.
The total amount paid for permanent
Imnrovementa Is $111,700.
This amount was paid for the new
Third snd Fourth ward schools now In
course of erection and the lota on which
they will stand; the Kendrick home on
Washington street, which will be made
an annex to the Girls’ High School, and
the large lot at the corner of Luckle
and Pine etreets, on which wilt stand
the new Fifth ward school.
It is proposed that the lot on which
now stands the Marietta Street school—
the Fifth ward—be used as the site for
the branch Carnegie library. Mr. Car
negie has offered the city $20,000 for
the building of this school, on condi
tion that the city furnish the location.
The park board hns recommended
that the lot be used for the library, the
finance committee seems to favor It,
and It Is highly probable that council
will vote so to use the lot at the regular
session next Monday afternoon.

INCREASES IN RENT
Leased For Five Years By
Catering Company at
Higher Rate.
At an Increased rental the two-story
building on the northwest corner of
Whitehall and Alabama atreets, owned
by J. J. Lynch and occupied by Silver
man’s restaurants and saloon and the
J. J. Goodrum Tobacco Company, has
been leased for a term of five years by
the Silverman Catering Company. The
lease was recorded In the county clerk’s
office Friday and dates from October 7.
For the first two years the Silver-
man Catering Company will pay $668.67
per month or $8,000 a year. This, It Is
stated, Is an Increase over the former
rental. For the last three years of the
lease the monthly rental will be 1700
or 18,400 a year.
Tho lease which expires on October
7 wns held by the H. Silverman Com'
pany, which owns the saloon, and la
entirely separate from the Silverman
Catering Company, which runs the res
taurant. As prohibition will put the
H. Silverman Company out of existence
the Silverman Catering Company takes
the lease of the building.
Colonel Harry Silverman, head of the
two companies, said Friday morning:
"There are very few who anticipate
any depredation In property values In
the mnln streets of Atlanta. I for one
am willing to pay more than ever be
fore, as I believe there will be no alump
when prohibition goes Into effect.
"We have not yet decided what uae
we will make of the bar. It would
make a handsome soda fountain and
we are thinking of uelng It for that
purpose.’’
In the’ building are two restaurants,
one up stairs and one down; and Good-
rum cigar stand and the Silverman sa
loon.
