bearish position to which nre
have eo consistently adhered during the
past tenr weeks, wo now advise the rever

today, notwithstanding our belief that fur

short Interest In of tremendous proportions.
At the same time some remarkably goinl

standard calls. In view or the tremen

securities arc now selling, we confidently
recommend the purchase of Union Pacific,

In American stocks lu London, a furtb
sharp drop at the opening here, an abrupt
recovery and then a series of irregular
fluctuations with the trading down to com
paratively small volume, were the succes
sive phases through which this morning's
market passed. There seemed little room
for doubt that tome tort of support had
botp organised over Hundny, and that when
the first rnsh of liquidation was over buy
ing orders wore thrown for this purpose
Into all’ the lending stores. There was uo
question, furthermore, that an. enormous
short Interest remained uncovered In spite
of the fact that the available supply of
stocks must have beeu largely increased dur
ing last week’s decline. The borrowing de
mand In the loan crowd this morning was
unusually heavy, and l-t some Instances,
notably New York Central nml Pennsylva
nia, the borrowers were so urgent ns to of-
n premium for the nse of the stocks for
riivery.
Among the nettve trading coterie these
technical clrrumstancee. along with the-re
flect Ion that the market hail had a week
of uninterrupted decline, appealed for tho
time being more strongly then any of tho
broader considerations In the flunticlnl situa
tion. Tbe luellimtlou on all sides was in
the shape of speculative ventures for a
good roily and the action of the market,
which roue more easily than it went down,
showed thnt those operation* were for ths
moment mooting with success.
