Savannah Company Can Not
Maintain Separate Or
ganization.
If th* Savannah Volunteer Guard.
Insist on their Intention of withdraw
ing from the national guard of the
■tate they will forfeit every right to
exist as a separate and Independent
military organisation.
This was the result of a ions cub-
ference held Tuesday between Major
W. B. Stephens, commander of the bat
talion; Major W. W. Williamson and
Colonel WIIHam Garrard, former com
manding offlcera; Adjutant General A
Cheney’s Expectorant cures
coughs, colds, LaGrippe and
croup. 50 years on the market.
Ail druggists. 25c.
J. Scott, Colonel C. L. Anderson and
Governor Smith.
It was determined that the law gave
no military’ organization the privilege
of existing as an Independent organi
zation. Just what will be the Anal ac
tion of the Guards In not known, but
na the Savannah committee and the
governor agreed as to the require
ments of the law. It is believed that
the Guards will be advised to conform
to the law In so far as possible. Un
less they do so, the organization must
go out of existence.
The Dick law Is In reality a codi
fication of all the military laws, and
Is said to contain little new matter.
No organization can exist separately
without coming within the provisions
of this law. .Conformity to the law’ In
spirit more than strict letter Is re
quired, and any military organization
that does so Is not molested.
In order to prevent this kind of dis
organization of the national guard, a
conference of officers from four of the
six regiments In the state was held re
cently In the office of the adjutant gen-
Thls conference decided to enter a
strenuous protest against allowing any
mllitarv organisation to exist Inde
pendently. Those present at that con
ference were: Colonala Walter Harris,
of the Second. Macon: John D. Twiggs,
of the Third. Augusta;' R. L Wylty,
of the Fourth, Albany, and Clifford L.
Anderson, of the Fifth, Atlanta. The
action of the meeting was afterwards
stated to Major J. 8. Dozier, command
ing the First cavalry, and he gave It
%U- Indorsement. -
\
It Is probable that Governor Smith
will Issue a statement later on re
garding this phase of the military
question.
