Americas, (3a., Dec. 18.—A verdict of
acquittal was rendered last night by
the Jury In the trial of Marlon Sims,
charged with the murder of Benjamin
Llghtfoot, at DeSoto, near Amerlcus,
recently. Sims struck Llghtfoot with u
billiard cue recently, resulting. It was
charged, from a feud of long standing,
and pleaded self defense.

Macon, Ga., Dec. 18.—A meeting of
the hospital medical board will be held
Friday evening, December 20. At the
regular meeting In January, officers for
the coming year will bo elected, and
reports of the various committees will
be read.
Superintendent Eugene B. Elder, of
the Macon hospital, Is preparing his re
port.
LAMAR WINS MEDAL
IN DRILL CONTEST.

Macon, Ga., Dec. 18.—Sergeant H. C.
Lamar won the company medal offered
by the Macon Volunteers when the
company Inspection was held.
The Inspection was not for the best
drilled man, but the one whose equip
ment, including his uniform, gun,
locker, shoes and other articles that
were In the best condition.
The Inspection was made by Colonpl
Walter E. Harris, of the Second Geor
gia regiment.

next two or three days the East Macon
cars wilt be running all the way to
Tattnall Square, and the lung belt cars*
will run over tbat line In both direc
tions. The tracks have been laid and
the poles set and everything Is now

Albert Jones, together with J. D.
Crump, are busy receiving city tax.
Yesterday a Urge number of persons
dropped Into the office to pay up their
state and county taxes for the year
and to register for next year's elections.
There are still, however, several hun
dred persons who have not paid their
taxes, and aa but two days more are
left for this to be done signs point

drivers who went on strike were back
at work today. Both sides signed an
agreement by which the drivers wont

ELOPER MISSING;
GIRL’S FATHER HELD
Asheville, X. C., Dec. 18.—An elope
ment, planned by Miss Katharine
Barns, the pretty 14-year-old daugh
ter of Captain William Barns, of Alex
ander, N. C., anil Frederick Evans, aged
22, was frustrated by the girl’s father
on Monday. Miss Barns and Evans
met secretly Sunday night and planned
to elope the following morning. Cap
tain Barns missed his daughter and,
suspecting an elopement, set out for
Asheville, nnd overtook tho elopers
within eight or ten miles of this place.
According to Barns’ statement, he ad
ministered a severe beating to Evans
and left him In a thicket nlong the
roadside. He made his daughter got
Into his buggy and took her home.
Evans has not been seen or heard of
since. Barns wns arrested and brought
to Asheville.

recovery of the bodies at Yolande mine
No. 1, where the disastrous explosion
took place, Is made much more diffi
cult by the Increasing quantity of wa
ter and the dangerous gases that
threateo the lives of the reecuers.
Forty-two bodies have already beea
taken out and It Is said that not more
than ten more remain In the shaft.

ing by government officials here of 75,-
000 bottles of olive oil, not properly
labeled, Is causing a dearth of supply
that commodity here and has
brought about an appeal from -New
Orleans wholesale grocers to tho sec
retary of agriculture to be allowed to
relabel the product. This quantity
represents ten shipments, averaging
two months of bottled oil Imported
from France. Tho government pure
food authorities claim tho law requires
the label "olive oil" to bo In English, ,
whereas tho label Is In French.

men who were being held In Tift coun
