to macerate Mr. Johnson, which waa
dons amid loud cheera, punctureif now
and again by a few piercing ahrleka
from Johnaon, who, after the festlvl-
tlea were over, waa snapshotted sev
eral times while posing aa a martyr, a
not altogether successful performance,
for no martyr ever weighed more than
2011 pounds.
After Mr. Johnson's case had been
attended to the city waa all agog over
the arrival or non-arrival of Temporary
Chairman Bell. Finally the local pa
pers Issued extras that Mr. Bell had
come In on a handcar, or on foot, or
somehow, and there waa a general sigh
of relief, for It waa realized that now—
now—the convention could proceed.
Acid Test for 8peech.
Mr. Bell waa Imperative. He wae the
only man who had submitted a keynote
speech to the acid teat at Lincoln and
of course there could be no keynoting
for which Mr. Bryan had not furnished
both the note and the key.
It wae a nice, delicate, polite open
ing convention session, held In a hall
which waa more artistically decorated,
better adapted and conveniently ar
ranged for Its purpose than any great
meeting held In this country. Denver
people who were In the bulk of the hall
were exultantly and properly proud of
the building, but a hit awed by It all,
not convention-broken, so to speak.
The Band Played "Dixie.' 1
Perfect order waa maintained and the
session was calm and unemotional at
the start. The delgates cheered duti
fully whenever a banner bearing the
picture of Bryan waa brought In, ylpped
conscientiously when the band played
"Dixie," and otherwise acted as dele
gates to a convention like this should
act. Aside from the frequent excur
sion* Into “Dixie" and "Maryland," the
band added considerably to the depres
sion of the occasion by ploying soft
and plaintive music, full of andantes
and such other musical components as
add !o the sob effects.
It Is quite likely that Chairman Bell
has successfully completed a corre
spondence school course In oratory. He
had a fine command of the rising In
flection at the end of hla phrases and
periods, and when he stuck out Ills
hand In a graceful gesture, his thumb
wae always down, and his Itttie finger
up. His voles filled the hall. Every
one could hear what he said and alt
listened attentively.
Mr. Guffey Butta In.
Hla reference* to Democratic states-
men. living and dead, were sufficiently
applauded.
All In all Mr. Bell handed out a good
resonant, well-moulded and nicely
Placed keynote. Up to this time all had
seen peace and quiet. Then came a
slight diversion, for Mr. James Guffey,
of Pennsylvania, blandly Inquired If the
men who are running the convention
would not kindly kick him eome more,
letting it be known that ha la a glutton
for such punishment.
• Mr. Guffey had sent up a llat of com
mittee assignments and so had some
<thers In the I>enn*ylvanla delegation,
'halrman Bell wanted «o know how
about It, which was polite ef him, for
he knew how about It all the time. Aft
er the discussion Mr. Guffey got his
kicking and strolled out wearing a look
of deep resignation.
Judgs Psrksr.
Early In the day the name of Judge
Alton B. Parker, had been potted at
being one of a llat for whom tha clerk
had a telegram. Interest was languid. 1
but when the time came for the reso

Parker clamored for recognition in a
perfectly well-groomed way, a sort of
