GAIN I am naked the old, oldl
question, "I* It poaalble to truly j
love more than once In a life
time?" I have• anatrered a thousand
time*—and »o ha* every person who
ever acquired the pen habit.
And when all I* uld and done. It Is a
question which must be answered by
each Individual, according to his own
experience.
Observation teaches me to believe
that a growing, progressive nature Is
capable of more than one emotion
whlclu can be dlgnlAed by the name of
love.
The youth loves at 16 a woman usu
ally much his senior. He experiences
all the exquisite feelings which belong
to love In her presence. He trembles
nt the touch of her hand, he flushes at
the sound of her voice; his heart
thump* In hi, breast If he hears her
name mentioned suddenly; he lives In
the memory of her smile or of a caress.
Ing word or touch. His love is unrea
sonable, but nil dominating.
He loves her with all the sentiment
and passion of first youth. But he
awakens from his dream eventually—
usually a rude and painful awakening—
and he believes he Is done with love
forever.
At 25 he encounters a woman, some
young girl, who awakens all the best
qualities of his nature. Her fresh
beauty, her grace, her mental qualities
all appeal to him. He Is only happy In
her presence. Ills reason and his judg
ment are In accord with his passion.
The girl dies, or fate severs them.
He Alls his life with ambition and be
comes a power among men. At 46 he
suddenly encounters n woman who
changes the aspect of Ufa for him. She
Is necessary to his existence. He does
C feel tha unreasonable passion of tl;e
of 16, perhaps, nor does he sur
round his object with the halo which
hung about the girl who died, but he
loves this woman deeply and Intensely.
Each was a sentiment worthy of the
name of love—according lo the era of
his development.
There are loves which belong only In
the realm of Illusion. They would per
ish If put to the test of the common
place. Yet they are very beautiful and
sweet while they last, and they ore
rightfully called love—just as a still
born Infant Is an Infant
There are Infatuations which are not
love—mere magnetic attractions which

exist only while the object Is near; end
the people who marry while under such
an Influence awake to a realization of
the fertor they have made too late.
Some people pride themselves that
they are Incapable of more than one
love. Disappointed In this, however
early In life, they And themselves in-
ipable of another affection.
When this Is true, It Is the result of
brooding over a trouble until It haa be
come a mania, or the Indication of a
nature stunted In Its growth.
When the great passion comes to a
man or woman In the full prime of 111#,
it 1“ rarely suptdcnientHd hy anything
stronger than a deep affection after
wards. And, after all, the majority of
human beings never experience any- t
thing greater than affection, which
passes current for the emotion of love, i
and If It brings less happiness It brings, ,
too, less pain.
BUILDING OPERATIONS
INCREASED $228,000
Despite the depression, which lasted
well over three months Into this year,
the building permits of 190$ will show
a substantial Increase over those of
1907. The Increase now, with only
eleven and a half months gons, Is over
$226,000. This sounds Improbable, but
It’s a fact—the figures come from Ed
R. Hays, city building Inspsctor.
Mr. Hays says that building activity,
which returned with the passing of the
spring, was truly remarkable.
"Tho not as many dwslllngs have
been erected here this year as was
last," says Mr. Hays, "they have
been more costly. Building In Atlanta
was practically demoralised during the
earlier port of the year. But the quick
recovery Atlanta made from the panic
woe wonderful."
Tho permits for the flret three
months of 120$ amounted to only
$161,119. while those for the same pe
riod of 1907 reached the high water
mark of $1,>48,114. Thus did Atlanta
get deeply In the rut In building ac
tivity early In the year.
In 1907, 1,284 dwellings were erected,
while only 818. were built in 1908. In
1907 14 apartment houses were built,
while 18 were erected In 1908. A total
of 4.169 permits were Issued In 1907,
and 4,064 have been Issued this year to
date.
