Call Men From Which
Jury Will Be Se
lected.
UNION CITY, Tenn, Deo. 15,—
Judge Joseph Jones this morning hand-
ed the names of 100 cltltens to half
a score of deputy sheriffs of Obion
county, under directions of Sheriff
■ Saaterwood, and ordered them to sum
mon the venire to appear In court at
once, that twelve men to try the alleged
might riders for the alleged murder of
j Captain Quentin Rankin might be se-
I lected from their number.
{ Within a few minutes after Judge
(.Jones had handed his personally pre-
tiared list of veniremen to Sheriff Eaat-
Eerwood, the latter’s men were In the
[saddle and left for all parts «f the
Irounty, summoning the men to appear
let the court house at Union City.
J Judge Jones' deotslon to prepare his
town venire Is a victory for the state,
lthe defense having objected to any-
f,thing but ordinary proceedings, which

Adverse to Defendants.
Teeter-day's proceedings resulted ad-
!y to the defendants. Immediately
the men were brought Into court
the prosecution announced willingness
to proceed with the Issue, formally re
questing that the court, Instead of the
sheriff, as Is usual, select the Jury ve
nire. On the part of the defense It was
akked that the Indictments returned at
the October term of court, charging an
offense of a leas serious nature, the
first disposed of, and that the shoriff be
I permitted to select the Jury panel.
To both contentions Judge Jones de
cided adversely to the requests of At
torney Rice A. Pierce, who appeared
for the defendants. Then the defense
announced that they, too, were ready
for the trials to begin, but because of
(the ruling of tho court, under protest
.This concluded the court procedure of
the day. t
